maybe it's just my small town driving...but my 33's w/ 4.56's seem just fine w/ OD. I've only had the jeep for a few weeks though. before that i had a '99 auto. compared to the 3.73, 31 combo behind the 3spd auto, the combo i have now is really torquey. now i know i was less than ideal w/ the '99, but what's so bad about the OD kicking out when you go up a hill? My mom's lexus SUV downshifts while on cruise going up hills, and it's a 3spd + OD also.
although i can't argue w/ Lawrence's numbers. those are pretty nice, i'm about 250ishRPM lower (i'm estimating, b/c my speedo gear is for 35's).

Time to revive a really old thread. I have a fully stock '05 with a 42RLE and 3.73 with stock 215/75r15s. To me this is VERY jumpy. it almost seems like it is geared to low for the tires. Anyways, the other thing is, you guys are running really high rpms. I can cruise 0-45 while staying at 2000rpm. at 45, the od kicks in and I go down to almost 1300 rpm. I can go from 0-60 and stay under 2200rpm, and I can do it as fast as that four passanger sedan with 210hp. If I want to push it some, I can fly by them and stay around 2500 rpm. Why is it that you guys are running so high. I have to admit though 3200rpm is the highest I really ever go, and even when I had it to 4500 rpm, I felt like I had no need to ever let the engine get that high. I can't believe I am putting more power to the road. The tires are the same set it left the factory with so I can't imagine it was regeared. any info would be awesome. Jerry Maybe???

The reason I am asking is because I was fairly sure my stock gears would be PERFECT for 31"s, and maybe almost decent for 33"s.
Thanks guys, and sorry for bringing an old thread back to life.

Usually see 3.73 with 30" tires, not 28" like your tires. Based on the numbers you gave, 2000rpm at 45mph, it seems that you have 3.73 gearing. 3.73 and 28" tires will give a very good feel of acceleration compared to larger tires.

So... I just realized what I said is totally contradictory. I also realized that going up a hill at anything less than 50 does kind of chug. You live and learn I guess. I am just glad I haven't wasted any money learning yet.

It is always good to research before making a move. Better to do it correctly the first time. I have researched this topic for over a yr and a half. I am currently running 33s on a '03 Rubi with the 4 speed AT and it is marginal. I know that 4.88s would be good for where I am at but, I plan on 35s when the current 33s wear out and 5.13s work better with them. I'd like to regear at my leisure because my next move is a major one! Buying 5 new wheels, 5 35s, regearing and an aftermarket bumper w/tire carrier is going to add up quickly. Just do your best to decide NOW what you want to have as an end result. Be realistic, as well. Are you going to keep this interest 2 yrs down the road? Marriage plans? Deployment? Job security? Research is your friend.

I totally agree, and that is why I am doing the research now. I won't be going to 33"s for at least 3 more years. I need to graduate first. My PLAN is to do tube fenders first. Then do 33"s with regear at the same time. Later on maybe a 2.5 la lift. Depends on my situation then. I might fall into a good deal, like axles, and throw them under. Right now, it is pretty much in the air, but I am trying to learn as much as I can so I know what I really want. Also, it is pretty depressing knowing that my jeep will stay small for a few years. I might manage to continue the small stuff like a front bumper, and sliders, maybe a locker too, but I am really starting to grow one big Jeep budget.

i had my old jeep for 5 years before i lifted it. wrecked it before i got to put the 33's on it though.

you're in a perpetual cycle of "just a couple thousand dollars and it's done." before you know it you've spent twice the jeeps value on add-ons

Don't lose heart here, Bro! I wheeled your hard earned tax dollar purchased full sized rigs for over a quarter of a century and thought that I had my fill of wheeling.

I stumbled upon a S-10 site that was directed towards the "soccer mom's" crew cab. $8-9K later I knew it was at a dead end until I was ready for the SFA. I discovered that was not the golden path to pursue!

I then purchased a $2K XJ that I wrenched on a lot but, it took me to work and a 2K atv will not do that for you.

I guess that I am just advising you to plan carefully. I hope that you do not have to wait as long as I had to. My builds are planned around not having a tow rig and trailer but, I started late in life. I hope that you do better!

Well... my plans are also based on not having a tow trailer or second vehicle. Although, I do slightly have the upper hand because I am only 18, and I am currently able to save up money for the build for when I graduate college. Right now I have no bills, but my mom doesn't want me spending my money because I will end up spending a lot in when I leave head off to a four year school (thank that awesome guy in the sky for H.S. bridge classes, I got 32credits then). Well... the only really good thing I can do is stay optimistic, and know that by waiting a little, I have already saved my self money by realizing what I truly want to do to make my build come out right.
