4bt swap
 
so next summer im thinking of swapping a 4bt into my 05 lj rubi, 6 speed, 35's. from what ive been reading to physically bolt the motor in i will need motor mounts and trans adaper. im currently running a 4 inch suspension lift and a 1.25 inch body lift. id like to keep all the stock gauges working so id keep the computer in. and for the tach id use either the hesco adapter or something else. im also planning on putting a larger radiator and efan, frame brace under the engine bay, using a cut down center exit 6bt exhaust manifold.

what else is needed to do the swap and how do i find out what gearing i would need (or if stock 4.10 is okay)? thanks

You will need to weld new mounts to the frame. You will need to bypass the fuel pump in the tank. You will need a new transmission to mount the 4bt. The 4bt is also very heavy at almost 800# vs the 500# you have up front now.

I like diesel engine in a truck, but would not do one in a jeep. You will never get your investment back and most modern v8's weigh far less while offering comparable fuel mileage and plenty of torque.

this might be close to you.
pulling up at the other pump when your filling up would be almost worth it. im seriously thinking about this swap too, a lj would be a better platform to start on though!
did you find a crate motor? if u build i will follow your build thread closly!

I will mostly likely find a used motor from a bread truck. I was reading about a guy on 4btswaps that kept his nsg370. Still have a lot of research, planning, and saving to go though

I was in the same spot, and after a lot of research, and a lot of disappointing results, I changed my plans to an aluminum block vortec 5300 with 6 speed auto trans. there are a ton of advantages, smooth ride, tons of power, 25-30 mpg, and its much lighter than the 4bt. to me a v8 sounds better as well

the only thing i could see as an advantage is towing capabilities, and thats debatable and doesnt matter as even the LJ is too short of a wheelbase to pull anything significant

now i'm scouring the yards for late model silverados

X2 on this.. The OLD 4bt idea has come and gone. no real advantage to it any more.

Anything with decent torque will eat an NSG for breakfast. Novak recommends against using it on their site.

Remember those old military motors that could run off of practically anything. Karosene, used motor oil, fryer grease..... I don't know specifics, and I should research more, but with a conversion like that it could be possible. It would be a strong hold on the survival jeep rout.

If i were to use an nv4500 i know i need an adapter to keep my tcase but would i need for the motor too or could i remove the stock chevy adapter?

if i do the swap i think i will end up using the ford 4bt, taking the stock ford adapter off and getting and adapter off of a 6bt. this will allow me to run the dodge nv4500, then keeping the rest of my stock drivetrain stock as the nv4500 will bolt up to my nvg241or tcase.

I love mine, though it is still in the works, but it runs and drives!

I found a wrecked 6bt cummins dodge ram, and bought everything from the adapter plate the tail of the NV4500, it all bolts right to the 4BT, including the flywheel, clutch, throwout bearing ect ect, I even used the dodge ram clutch master cylinder. IMHO, this is the way to go, one of the strongest 5 speeds available, and everything bolts up, no expensive adapters and mismatched parts.

When it comes down to it, it depends on what you want out of your jeep, I love diesel, I love a loud turbo, and tons of low end torque. I have built 2 Chevy V8 YJs, and I will take my 4BT YJ over them any day.

I would not say the 4BT idea has come and gone, I would say it has the potential to stick around and become more perfected.

It would be hard to transplant one of those. They are in deuce and 1/2s .

The desirable ones are from the early 70's and are turbocharged. Lever on the dash to choose between gasoline / diesel / jet-a
