42RLE Questions

Transmission has been just fine until this morning.
Backed out of the garage just fine...shifted into drive and it had a long hesitation and shifted a little odd thru the gears. After I made it to the end of my street it shifted fine all the way to work. Checked the fluid level an it was fine. It does seem to smell a little burnt. It's got only 125,000 miles on it and she's mostly stock other that a set if 265/75-16 BFGs. Is this normal wear for these trannys. I did have the fluid changed at 65,000 miles.
Also does anyone have a remanufactured unit with a decent warranty?

Thanks,

Blake

The maintenance schedule calls for changing the fluid and filter every 30,000.

Google-fu turned up a couple. There must be more.

Not really sure what your asking? Is it normal for it to act up once, probably nothing is perfect. 130k on my 42rle and its perfectly good.

Mine did something similar last year. I replaced the fluid and filter. That didn't fix it. I took it to the dealership and they said there was an update for my transmission. They installed the update and its been fine since.

There's a software update for 03-04 models. Don't remember what it addressed though. I'd change your fluid and filter, 60k is a long time, and the 42rle is notoriously hot.

I have a '03. Do you just go to the dealer? Is there a charge?

Will they complain bigger tires and different gears?

They update the software in the PCM, I heard it was a couple hundred to do. 60K is too long between service. I would do a complete flush and filter (12qts of fluid). If it continues to act up you may need professional help. Mine only lasted about 70K before rebuild. The 42RLE's worst enemy is heat and they tend to run hot. Two of the best things you can do for long life in the 4-spd is regular fluid/filter changes and add an external cooler. Especially if you run oversize tires.

I stopped by my local dealer and asked about the firmware upgrade for the 42RLE of my 2003. There is one. He said it fixes rough shifting from 4th to 3rd. Cost was $85.00. I'll probably have it done Friday afternoon. I always learn things here on JF! Thanks to all.
