4 cyl fuel economy

I recently sold my 2000 TJ Sahara and now that the weather is getting nice I can't stand being without and I'm considering replacing it with a 4 cylinder model. I drive about 120 miles round trip to work and I've been considering the 4 cylinder for the better fuel economy. (I was getting about 17 mpg with my old Sahara) Do any 4 cylinder owners, or previous 4 cylinder owners, have the mileage numbers with the 5 speed and the auto transmission? Any comments or concerns will be appreciated. Anything to watch for as far as the options go? Thanks to all.

Cheers

Odd as it may seem, you will notice little if any fuel economy benefits with the 2.5L over the 4.0L engine. While the 2.5L is capable of slightly better fuel economy, few experience it because they have to "put their foot into it" more just to keep up with traffic that the 4.0L loafs at.

I don't think you'd be happy at all with a 2.5L after having had a 4.0L.

Jerry hit the nail on the head. I've had both engines and it was hard going from the 4.0L to the 2.5L. As for gas mileage, I average 15 mpg on my 2.5L with 33" tires and a manual.

Freeway mine gets about 18-19 with my set up. This is at about 75 mph and turning around 3 grand. If you go slower like 60-65 it gets better. Power isn't too big of a problem unless there is a steep hill or big headwind. There will be a difference in the two motors but since all my friends with 6cyl and same tires are geared higher, they arent much faster up the hills. On level ground though they can go 80+ easier because they are revving a lot less.

Thanks

Thanks to all who've responded. Pretty much what I had thought all along, but just wanted to be sure.

Cheers
