4 banger yj into tj?

My buddy has a 97 tj with a 4 cylinder and he's bolwn his engine... He has a parts yj sitting around with a good 4cylinder also. Are the engines the same and interchangable? And can he take his intake off the tj and put on the yj motor?

No your 89 4 banger was not carbed from factory........ And I assumed the OP just wanted to swap the long block parts not the tbi too.

Blocks are the same. Oil pan will have to be swapped and maybe the pump pickup. I have examined nearly every year model 2.5 and there just in no differences in the long blocks for installing purposes. Some gaskets and bearings are different between years.

Sorry, I didn't point out that I had the 4.2 in my '89. I figured that since my 6cyl was carbed so was the 4
