4.0L Issues?
on a 2000 4.ol jeep tj what is some common issues. right now i feel i have a lifter issue. that's what a mechanic told me it could possibly be. its making a real pisser of a sound like a ticking especially shifting and giving it gas and you can noticed it while its idling. when you start off it gets louder then kinda fades away but you can still hear it. could i have a lifter problem or a cracked manifold. i heard older 4.0l like mine have some issues. i also thought it was the water pump but i have sense think, its not that. what could casue a perfect running 4.0l to make a ticking/clapping noise. i also changed the oil and added some marvel mystery oil to it t see if that straightens it out. the guy told me to run it till its more severe, idk what to do, he said it hard to determine until they get into it. could i have a cracked header? or.....please any ideas would be appericated. its not like i beat the jeep either, it has 60,000 pampered miles oil always done at 2,500 miles , this noise makes my jeep sound like an old dump truck trying to go ..now

If I had to guess, I would say exhaust manifold.. Common problem with the TJ. Some later years are less prone to cracking, but I'm not sure the exact year the expandable joints were put into the build of the manifold (2002??)

Your header is probably fine.
You have the newer 2 piece style header which holds up very well. I've never seen or heard of one of these cracking. Check where the downpipe bolts up to the 2 collectors at the bottom of the header. Those bolts could be loose.

I thought the newer 2 piece header started in 2003 and the 2000 model like his (and mine) had the older design that is susceptable to cracking.

My 2001 is doing the same thing. Drives me nuts! I really seemed to notice it...and it seemed to get louder...right after I changed to a semi-synthetic oil. I'm thinking it's the lifters.

Mine does it too, I've heard a lot of 4.0s do it. My conclusion is that it's just a quirk of the 4.0 and to get used to it. I met a guy that had his start ticking at 50k miles, and he still got well over 250k miles out of it.

mine does it too. If mine was a daily driver, it would probably drive me insane, but mine is just a play toy that gets driven on the street maybe once a week, so I just ignore it. I too think mine is a lifter issue, but its not worth the effort to me to tear into it at this point. Lots of 4.0's do the same thing yours is doing, it just seems to be a common 4.0 issue. Sorry. The others I know that have the same issue, just ignore it. I know that doesn't help you much...sorry.

Have any of you that are having a lifter tick tried to put some ATF in the oil for a while and drain it? It will help get some of the gunk out of the valves and such. If it is just starting, that is the time to do it. It may just be getting a little dirty and need a lubricating bath.

I haven't tried anything. Except talking to myself and cussing.
![]() It was odd that it got louder after I changed to semi-synthetic. Maybe a slicker/thinner oil letting the lifters make more noise? It's the same viscosity and everything. I don't know. But I wish I could make it stop. It's annoying. The Jeep runs great, but that makes it sound like crap. ![]() |

I know it costs some $$ but try to drain some oil out and put in a quart of ATF. Drive it for a couple days making sure it gets really hot then drain the oil and change filter also. That may help if it is just starting to get some sludge build up on it.

I'll consider that. But since I just changed the oil, I think I'll wait til I have a little more mileage on the oil. Thanks!

anybody ever try Rislone oil additive? My dad swears by it and told me to add it on my next oil change. He says the lifter sound will go away if I use it. Anybody ever use this stuff in thier 4.0L...did it do anything?
