4.0 Hemi swap

I have a 98 4.0 sport and I just bought a grand cherokee that was totaled in a rear ender. I'm planning on putting the Hemi into my sport. What key things do I need to pay attention to and does anyone have any hints or suggestions to make this job a little easier? Thanks

Me and you are going to be close friends by the time we're done.

I just bought a 5.7 hemi, w5-45 rfe, t-case, harness and computer out of a wrecked ram.

I started here

http://www.fourwheeler.com/projectbuild/129_0507_1997_jeep_wrangler_tj_57l_hemi_v8_swap/index.html

found this

http://www.hotwireauto.com/?page=sales-tj

I have to send my fuse block harness out of my tj and the computer from the hemi. I also am buying all of the conversion items they have (looks like one stop shopping to me) You'll need a instrument cluster out of an 01 tj or newer. I lucked up and found one at a local you-pull-it place.

I was going to build a stroker but it would have cost about the same and been a larger pain in the posterior, besides hemi's sound cooler.

For other looking for this conversion, here's a bit of info I just got today from Advance Adapters, who are currently working on a TJ Hemi swap conversion kit:

All parts will be available one at a time or discounted if all bought at the same time. The engine mounts have been prototyped and the first set installed. We now have ordered all parts to make the production run of mounts. We are now accepting orders with shipment in about 2 weeks. We are acquiring all parts needed to do the swap and should be converting our 97 4 cyl TJ to Hemi within the next month or two. After we do the install ourselves in house will have some of the other small parts needed to make it happen. We want to make it so you can buy everything you need from the fuel pump to the radiator all at once or a piece at a time. Advance Adapters wants to be your one stop shop for this conversion but not have to buy a kit with parts you don’t need. P.S. we will not be selling engines for the conversion. Please contact me direct for more info.

Sounds great to me ... hopefully by the time I decide to throw a 5.7 or 6.1 in they'll have all the kinks worked out, then all I'd have to do is send off the electrical bits for converting.

I just fired my Hemi conversion for the first time Tonight! I used Squire for most parts, Alumarad for the Radiator only $500 Built to hemi specs w/trans cooler- they build them for the big companys that just mark them up to $700 and Moperunlimited.com for the factory parts very good prices! This is the fourth Hemi I have done but this is the first of my own!

I LOVE having a 5.7 HEMI in my Rubicon.......... It is awesome..... BUT, i just blew out my rear end a few days ago. It couldnt take the power.

The swap is not that bad. Tony at Hotwire is a god at Hemi swaps. He knows all that you can every need to know about this swap and has made the wiring harness for about 90% of all Hemi swaps to date.

If you do the math, you can get ALL the parts you need for around $7,000. NOT INCLUDING the hoses, belts, fluids, scrap metal, and custom things like exhaust, and AC lines.

If you are competent mechanically, you can do this swap yourself for $9-10,000.
If you have a shop do it, you can expect, I would say, about $12-15,000.

Either way you go, when you are done.... you WILL LOVE IT.

Hey, N8RB8R..... what kind of MPG are the 4 swaps you did getting? I am trying to see the average, because I really dont think mine is what it should be.

Is that because Brendan did it? Did you blow a 44 out in the rear with Chromo and all that or was it just stock?

I would plan on spending the money for the wiring harness mods and computer programming. You don't want to try and chase wiring problems and the harness that Hotwire sells is first class and simple! I had to buy a fuel tank and pump out of a wrecked 05 TJ for my 97 conversion.

5.7 swap and down stream damage

Was the 5.7 engine swap the reason for the rear axle failure or was it more foot related?
More importantly are you rebuilding the D44 or replacing with a D60, D70 or 14bolt?

Reason for the questions, I have driven a 325i with a late Corvette 5.7 / 6spd on a Solo track with no damage to the original qualif diff or gear set. (And I beat on it.)

A Hemi motor with a 4:1 reduction transfer case, 4.56 axle gearing, and 36" tall tires is much harder on a rear axle than a Bimmer with a Vette motor.
