3rd brake light/plate relo, no tire carrier

Anyone have a link for a thread about running a setup with no tire carrier (tire stays strapped in the back) where I can use a center 3rd brake light with my plate under it or something? Ive searched but cant find one. If I had the resources I would just make something. Possibly a sheet metal tab with a light at the top and I could drill some holes in it to mount the plate.

Thanks

How about simply removing the 3rd brake light completely? That is what I did, and have had no legal issues yet.

Another thing to consider is that if you relocate the license plate to the tailgate, you will need additional power for a license plate light.

Not a big deal to do to run an additional "button contact" like the current ones for the 3rd brake light.

Meh, I was thinking of not running one because itll be right in headlight territory and should be able to see. We will see, theres a couple license plate brackets that have a built in light, just need the power.

Don't know about your state, but here in Texas, license plate light is checked as part of required safety inspection.

Older pictures but I ditched the third brake light and use the button contacts to power the license plate light. If I were to add the third brake light back I'd probably use an LED strip under the rear valence.

That's exactly what I have - an LED strip under the valence. It works OK and only cost $4.

Im going with the TNT bracket so I can also mount the cb antenna in the center for better RX/TX. Also installing the ORFAB license plate light/third brake light combo. It will give it a much cleaner look.

Free skier, I did not realize there is a large square hole behind the tire carrier as shown in your second picture above. Is that hole present on all TJs?

The hole is there on 03-06 TJs. That's where the vent is.

And so nobody is confused I swapped an 03-06 tailgate onto my 97 because the original was damaged.

Ok, thanks. Makes sense now. I have had my spare and carrier off my '02 a number of times and don't remember seeing the hole.
