30,000 mile service

I had my oil changed at the dealership the other day, and they gave me an estimate on what is recommended at 30K. Front and rear axle service, auto transmission service, and engine tune up. Total was around $550. I think I can do this stuff myself.

1) Front and rear diffs- I've got write ups from Stu's, 4x4explor, and US41.org. Drain, clean off old gasket, new gasket, fill. Some refer to putting a friction modifier additive into the mix. Is that all there is to this? I think my diff

2) I think the transmission write ups I've seen are for manuel, is the auto about the same? Open fill hole, open drain hole and drain. Refill. Is that all there is to that?

3) Besides new spark plugs and air filter is there anything else done in an engine tune up? My motor is a 4.0, The TJ is an 04 auto, D35 axle, I may have to further identify the automatic transmission, unless there is just one standard trans in TJ's.

I plan on having all the proper tools; torque wrench, scraper, allen sockets. anything else?

thanks for your input.

I've got my 30k service interval coming up real soon also. I decided it was a good time to switch all my fluids over to full synthetic. My bill to Amsoil was just over $100 for all the fluids, an oil filter, and a hand pump for filling diffs. I bought a set of Champion 4412 plugs, and an ACDelco air filter a while back. All I need now is a gasket scraper, some brake cleaner, and some RTV. So I figure it's costing me ~$150 and that's going all out.

I've got a manual tranny, so I can't speak to the automatic, but your list sounds pretty good. Don't forget to get under the front end and grease the fittings on the steering components.

A standard safety razor blade will scrape the gaskets off.

There is no drain plug on an auto unless you have a aftermarket style pan. Just be sure to use DC atf+4 fluid [dealer only atleast I couldn't find it in any stores]in the trans wouldn't want to void your warranty. The diffs are a peice of cake just jack it up high enough to get under the rear. about 2 qts each f&r. The rest of a tune up is all comoon sense stuff.

DC recommends changing spark plugs with only 30,000 miles? Strange.

Anybody have anything to add to an engine tune-up?

that is the normal recommendation for cars without platinum plugs. platinums will up the interval to 100,000 miles.

The fluid won't void the warranty unless DC gives it away for free. That is the only way a manufacturer can legally require you to use their own brand of fluid. However, they can say that whatever fluid you use has to meet certain standards.

I've never heard that before. I know if you're using platinum plugs, you should get double instead of single for an '03 vs. an older Jeep. Since they're not platinum, I thought the 4412's should be good for distributor and distributorless both

No sir in 2003 Jeep started using NGK. I just learned this when I put my supercharger in. I too bought champion thinking hell thats whats in it. The Jeep pinged severly so I pulled the plugs back outr to gap them larger when I did so I grebbed my old plugs just to see what the gap was. To my suprze the were NGK. I highly reccomend you ALWAYS use the same plug as the maufacturer except when dealing with a mdofied engine.

Jepp rccomends flushes untill you reach 100k then a filter change. If my tranny last to 100k with a supercharged 4.0 I will be suprised so I will probably never change my filter.
