Are you going by what the gas gauge is telling you or are you actually going by the odometer mileage divided by the number of gallons used since your last fill-up? The gas gauge itself is extremely inaccurate. If it is indeed getting that poor of mileage, I'd first suspect one of your 02 sensors has gone bad and forcing your air-fuel mixture to be way too rich which will cause extremely bad fuel economy.

And a big welcome to JF to you Mennis!

Not sure if all TJs have the same gas gauge ailment as ine (but everyone I've talked to does), but the top end of the tank vanishes into thin air. Usually 15-20kms and I'm down to 3/4 of a tank. I let it go to 1/4 tank the other day, and filled up...by how much I put in and what the stated capacity is, I still had well over 1/2 tank.

Winter sucks for gas mileage....all makes and models... I worked for GM for years, and every winter it was the same thing...car after car, all drivers reporting that the bottom fell out of their fuel mileage once it turned cold.

Winter means long warm-up times of burning gas and sitting still, so that accounts for a portion of it.

Cold engines are just plain inefficient....under load when cold, you can almost measure gallons per mile instead of miles per gallon.

The biggest factor, in my opinion, is resistance. It takes power to turn every shaft, every gear, every bearing...when things are cold and stiff, it takes more power to move everything.

And, fluids are super thick when cold, so triple or quadruple the resistance in both diffs, the transmission, and transfer case. It all adds up.

Some folks swear that additives that are put in winter fuel makes it extremely inefficient compared to summer fuel, but I can't say for sure on that one.

And, jeeps get lousy mileage at the best of times.

The only positive thing is that the price of gas here in NB has recently fallen from $1.40 (ish) to the high 60's. Sitting at around 78 or 79 now, I think.

Your rpms are at 3500 at 120 kph? Those rpms seem way too high for that speed. Is your axle ratio and tire size still stock?

Are you guys talking MILES or KILOMETERS?! I think you're getting your units (insert sophmoric laughter here) mixed up. There is 1.6 KM per mile. So, 200KM=125miles. If he's getting 125 miles per tank, there's something REALLY wrong. Heck, if he's getting 200 MILES per tank, it's still horrible. I'm usually still at 1/4 tank when I hit 210 miles.
If GCFISH is geting 20 KM out of a 1/4 tank, there's something REALLY REALLY wrong. That's only 12 miles!! That's on a pace for 50 miles to the tank or roughly 2.5 miles/gallon!

Wow...4 posts while I was typing my reply....

No offense at all, but you say you're doing 120? There's a good portion of your fuel economy problems right there.

And you are still talking about kms per fill-up. From the post above, it looks like Jerry's fuel gauge is as wacked as mine....hehe...and everyone elses.
I can fill up, pull onto the highway and WATCH mine fall to 3/4 of a tank, and I'm not exaggerating. Normally I have logged around 20kms when it hits 3/4 of a tank...

So keep track of the mileage you do at each fill up, and the amount of litres it takes to fill. Do not assume that just because your needle is almost at empty that you are actually there.....you could be getting 200kms per 1/2 tank each time.

Good mileage calculator here:

And, welcome to the forum!

There will be no mixing of units here!! hehe

I was speaking to the inacuracy of the TJ gas guages.

I can seriously fill up, over the full mark and hit the highway, and be down to 3/4 after 20kms. I was scared to death when I drove an hour and a half away and picked up my TJ. Filled it up and headed home....GASP....is the gas running out on the ground???

Anyway...with litres used and kms travelled, my mileage is right on with everyone else...right around 20mpg. Sometimes higher, sometimes lower.

My point is that the OP could be filling up and still have over a half tank in there, but think it's nearly empty.

But yeah, now that Jerry pointed it out, 3500 at 120kms is pretty high too....
I have an Echo with a sewing machine motor that doesn't rev that high....
