2005 TJ - Engine Tick

My '05 TJ (4.0) has had a engine tick that's been getting worst over the last few months. I took the Jeep to the dealer yesterday and they just called, needs new lifters and a cam.

Do any of you have any experience with this? Should I have them do any additional work while they have the engine torn down?

Welcome to the club. How many miles are on it? Mines been done once at less than 1000 miles, is on it's 3rd OPDG and now needs another new cam/lifters. Neighbor just spent over $3300 to get his fixed. Dealer quoted me $2500 to determine that's what they'll do, then additional to actually do it-looking at over $3300 to have it done there. I'll run it till it pukes.

Best of Luck,

Mike

Mike, I have 68K. Luckily I'm still under warranty.

I have another '05 Rubi LJ. Only has 16K miles, so far so good. It is an earlier build date than my TJ.

I doubt I'll get to anywhere near the miles where this issue comes up and still in warranty.

I spoke with the service manager today and they are going to replace the OPDA regardless, along with all the lifters and cam shaft. You can say I squeaked in under the warranty buzzer, only 1500 miles left (and a few months).

Mine only ticks when I'm usually going up a mountain i.e. giving it alot of gas at around 2k+ rpm. But I have a 98 so this is probably completely irrelevant to you.

Well guys, I got the Jeep back today, what difference. It runs great!

New OPDA, lifters, cam, etc. The dealer did an awesome job. Just so you know, Ontario Jeep (in So. Cal.) did the work. They were professional and did everything right the first time. Kirk, Rick, THANK YOU for the great service.
