2005 6 speed tranny question

Sorry , yet another questions. I had a 93 cherokee, and a 2003 jeep tj. Both had the 5 speed tranny, and the 03 shifted very smoothly. I have an 05 tj with the 6 speed. Has 43,000 kms on it. The tranny doesnt seem as smooth as the 5 speed. Especiallly going into 2nd gear. Sometimes seems like its catching as it goes into gear. Not silky smooth like the 5 speed. Don';t know how else too expalin it, kinda like the sincro gear is not right. Is this normal with anyone else with the 6 speed.
Thanks Mike

You can't shift them fast. They are a truck tranny. But, here's something to look for, Many of the NSG 370's came from the factory a quart, sometimes more, low on trans oil. My '06 was a quart low. Check that oil and better yet, put the Royal Purple Synchomax in there. Mine shifts much smoother now. I would presume being a quart low affected it, but the shifting is very noticeable better now. There was also a couple TSB's on the '05 models in regards to clutch linkage and also the reverse gear shift fork bending/failing. Check that oil now. 14MM allen head to check, 17MM allen head to drain. If you don't have really good socket type allen head wrenches in those sizes, buy them. Those plugs are on there tight and they look easy to strip. I got mine at Autozone. They came in a 3 pack. Well worth the $10.00 investment. Bob

Not to sound lame, but WHERE on the transmission body are the fill and drain plugs? I have looked but can't find them...

The allen head is huge, just get under there and look, the 17mm will be on the bottom, and the 14 on the side (I think the drivers).

I'll have to check those tomorrow...that would explain why every time I start forward I think of trucks in a WWII movie.

Mine is rough too.. I plan on changing the fluid this weekend. I hope it improves as it has gotten worse over the past two weeks.

X2 on the RP Synchromax.
I changed it at about 10K in my O5 and there is a huge difference. But, it is still a truck tranny and needs to be shifted slower than a sports car.

The fill plug is on the right (passenger) side of the tranny.

HTH,
Dave

Wow a quart low!! I just checked my FSM and it claims the refill capacity is only 3.17pts, that's just over a quart and a half. Some of your trannies must have been all but empty. Guess I better get a 14mm and check mine asap. Thanks for the heads up.

Ive noticed the same rough shifting in the lower gears since the day I drove it off the lot. I assumed it had to do with the HD transfer case, I'm going to check the fluid this weekend maybe change it out with the good stuff(Purple crap).

The check/fill plug (14MM) is on the right/passenger side of the trans a little past midway back. The drain (17MM) is on the bottom in the rear and center. Mine took a little more than 3.17 PTs to fill. When I said it was a quart low that is an estimate. But it was a fairly close estimate. Over on the ROF there are a couple guys who had the same low oil condition. The RP synchromax really does make them shift smoother. I have no idea why, but it does seem to work. Bob

Yeah, mine does it too. I think all the 05's have the same problem with the 1-2 shift. I've noticed it's much worse when it's cold out. Just shift slower. As you shift from 1-2 you'll feel a "pause" while the shifter slips into 2nd. Use a light touch when shifting. Don't fight it. Remember, it's a Jeep, not a race car.

Went to AutoZone and bought the three pack of hex sockets..$10. Just checked it and it is low. I have a piece of stainless wire bent up for checking the Dana 80 on my Dodge/Cummins and it has one end to measure 1/4" fluid depth and 3/4" depth below the bottom of the fill hole. It doesn't touch the 1/4 but is part way up on the 3/4 end, that's depth below the fill hole which is supposed to be no more than 3/16" below the bottom of the hole. Well, I called the dealer and they get $19/qt for tranny oil....WOW. Is the royal purple syncromax oil ok to use for add oil? I'm guessing by the shape and design of the tranny housing it will take a big share of a qt. Looks like I better buy a cheap bottle pump too, another nice user friendly fill location..LOL. TIA.

Yeap, my '06 is the same way. It's though to synchro going from 4.46 1st gear to 2.61 2ng gear is a big jump. The the heavy duty sycro is't as fast as that in a close ratio sports car, so you must make a slower deliberate 1st to neutral to 2nd style shift and not a 1st - 2nd slam (like I do in my wife's Spyder!).

Oh yea, X10 on the synthetic tranny oil. Just drain and replace. you only need a couple quarts!
