Model year 2006 only had a 3 year/36k mile warranty.

True, although we did get the federally mandated 8/80 emissions warranty. Not sure about transferability of that. Not that that helps here.

How so? Did you have an option to purchase a longer warranty? Are you the original owner? All the warranty books that came with my Jeep only show a 3/36. I even called Chrysler to verify and they confirmed 06's only have a 3/36 powertrain warranty.

The paperwork I have with my '06 states 3/36 as well, this is why I thought I'd be wasting my time at a dealer trying to get them to replace anything.

You bought an extended warranty. Posts here were referring to the factory warranty which is 3/36 for an '06 and 7/70 for an '05.

Well it finally happened. Started her up this morning, 55 degrees out. Drove her less than 40 yards and received 5 seconds of "laughing monkey" then it stopped. Pulled over, she was idling around 500 rpms, oil gauge was normal.

But thankfully she's not my DD, turned around and parked her for the car. I'll schedule appointment with dealer once they open and thankfully she's still covered under the CPO warranty until 80k or June 2012. She has 68,700 miles

So....before I call dealer...

What should I say? If I say OPDA and laughing monkey any chance they'll have any idea?

Wondering if I should just give them link to thread, for Service Mgr.

I'll push to have OPDA and CAM replaced if I see major wear. What about lifters?

Any feedback and what and not to say is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Fucso, are you going to drive it to the dealer or have it towed?

If the dealer isn't going to replace the cam I see no reason to go. You will be frustrated. I don't know the warranty deductible (mine was $100) but they will likely decline knowledge of the situation. If not I've heard reports of the OPDA being listed as electronic and not powertrain (as evident by the search criteria for dealer parts). My dealer said it wasn't covered until I argued with him. He also said the cam gear was fine. I'd expect a lot of headache's. There have been reports of complete cam coverage though so I suppose it's worth a shot.

I think this is a good example of what doing nothing will yield. You are fortunate to have the laughing monkey warning. I wish you luck with the dealer. You have all the info you need to push them. I would also be insistent on a new OPDA not just a gear replacement. The laughing monkey means the bushings/shaft is shot.

What points did you bring up so they did cover the OPDA under warranty?

Did you CAM have abnormal wear?

You make valid points, but I have to at least try. When they do replace OPDA...then it would be a no brainer to Mod.

Not necessarily if you are still under warranty. Having a modded OPDA could negate your warranty. If you can please get some pics of your OPDA wear.

the idea was to replace current non-mod OPDA under warranty.

then modding the new unit, as the CPO warranty should be up by the time, if/when the OPDA goes again.

i will get detailed pics of the OPDA and CAM when I go to the dealer.

appointment scheduled for Tuesday AM.

I used logic. When he said it wasn't covered under the powertrain I asked him how an engine component the drives the oil pump wasn't covered under the powertrain. He then told me he would check again and wouldn't you know it was covered. Some here have reported that their dealer said it was an electrical/ignition component.

Once it was replaced I modded it. My warranty was 7/70 and it failed at 60K. The measly 1/12K warranty on the OPDA was not "warm and fuzzy" enough knowing what we all know now.

Also the dealer specifically said the cam gear was okay. I have no reason to trust that and side with others who think that one affects the other. I would suspect your cam gear is worn, but I don't know the lifespan after that point. The OPDA is the weaker sacrificial component. It will wear more severely.
