2004 TJ Wrangler--check engine light

ok,,so I bought my TJ used with 60000 miles on her. It runs good, has a 5 speed manual,,and the dreaded check engine light came yesterday. Whats the usual cause for this?? If there is one. Perhaps the 02 sensor??

Could be lots of things. Go to Autozone and they'll check your OBD for free and tell you what the code is.

turn your key on-off-on-off-on and it will flash the codes. Post the codes in here and we'll go from there.

If you would have gone to the store 2 hours ago when I suggested it you'd probably have the problem fixed.

Check your gas cap.

Taken from the Jeep Wiki...

"455 A large leak has been detected in the evaporative system! "

As htownjeep said, check the gas cap.

x14 on the gas cap.

once you get a new gas cap on. disconnect a battery terminal for a few minutes to reset the light. should be good to go.

You can go to Auto Zone Advance or O'Reilys. They are all ****ty parts stores at BEST.They will read the codes for ya.But they're code readers do only that.Hopefully a p0455 code is just the gas caP,which is normally the case.People think that Autozone or these places can fix your Jeep or car with just a code reader. They are sadly mistaken it takes alot more than a code reader to properly fix a vehicle...

A large leak is more than likely something other than the gas cap.

Thanks a lot. I had a chat with my mechanic and he confirmed what you've noted above. While it's in the shop, I'd like to have the guys do a general tune-up on it as it hasn't had one in years. Aside from plugs, wires and looking at the throttle body, what ekse would you suggest?
