2003 Wrangler Transmission Noise
I have recently bought a 2003 Wrangler with a 4.0L and an automatic transmission. It has 78,000 miiles. It has a noise that sounds similiar to what I would decribe as an exhaust leak, but it is coming from the transmission. The noise is almost non existent until the transmission warms up. It doesn't matter if the thing is in park, neutral, or in gear. The more rpms the faster the sound. the transmission seems to shift fine and it runs great. The noise is drving me nuts. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this noise?

You sure it isn't an exhaust leak?
I have the same tranny and can't think of a thing that would make that noise.

I thought it was an exhaust leak as well. My daughter's boyfriend, who is a mechanic thought the same. We made sure the exhaust manifold was tight. He used a scope to locate where the noise was coming from and believes that the noise is coming from the front end of the transmission. I took it to a AAMCO transmission shop, they looked at it an could not tell me anything more, other than not to drive it for a long distance because the transmission may fail. Nobody has been able to tell me what part they think may be making the noise.
Like I said in the original post other than the noise, it drives fine. It has me baffled and all of the mechanics that I have had look at it baffled.

I just got over the clucking chicken syndrome in my 05 Rubicon with the 4spd Auto. It was unbearable!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It got so bad that if I went through a drive-thru people were turning their cars off thinking the clucking/knocking sound was coming from their cars!!!!! It sounds like an exhaust leak, but if you remove the 4spd Auto inspection cover I bet the noise is coming from inside there. Everyone I took my Jeep to said it was the transmission or the torque converter, or a engine with bad bearings!!!! My Jeep shifted fine and I couldn't believe a transmission with 45K would be bad (I do all maintenance myself). I searched forums and finally found a video on Youtube with the exact noise I had (mine noise was worse). I bought the flex plate online for 79.00 and had a friend at a Jeep dealership drop my transmission. My flex plate wasn't just cracked it was completely broken all the way around except for maybe a 2mm section!!!!! It's the cheapest looking flex plate I've ever seen and it's no wonder it breaks. I looked all over for an aftermarket HD upgrade, but in the end I had to go with an OEM one.
Maybe I'll get another 45K out of this one before I hear that lovely clucking/knocking noise again. I still find myself hearing that noise although it's gone! It's honestly going to take me a while to get used to a quiet Jeep lol. My advice is replace it ASAP before it chews up the torque converter, bell housing, and crank position sensor!!!

Well Friday night my daughter's boyfriend and I removed the transmission and transfer case. The flex plate did no appear to have any defects or cracks. Everything was tight no loose bolts. We looked for any signs of rubbing or any other damage, and found nothing. We removed the torque converter and checked the shafts for any marks or damage of any kind, and found nothing. There were no leaks of any type. We put a new flex plate on, not an aftermarket, it is a genuine Mopar replacement part. Put everything back together, and still have the ticking or clicking noise. The noise is not extreme, but it is annoying to me.

Well here we go again. I have talked to a transmission guy and he is telling me that it is the torque converter. I have one on order and will be putting it in on friday. Hopefully this will take care of the problem. Will keep you posted.............
