These forums have been a home away from home since I bought my jeep and I've done a ton of work with the help of you guys, so thanks! I'm hoping someone can give me some advice. My Jeep was getting a little grumpy sifting into 1st or 2nd for a little while, but now it's acting like it is stuck in gear, but doesn't move. If the jeep is running and I let of the clutch it stalls, even though the shifter is in between gears (ie neutral). If I let off the clutch while giving it gas, it only moves forward 2-5 inches and stops, but it's like trying to take off in 3rd or 4th. Physically, I can move the shifter through the gears, but it doesn't seem to make a difference. I replaced the clutch about 18 months ago, and it has seemed fine. Am I looking at the transmission, or is there some stupid little screw or something that came loose?!? TIA!
FYI, I have not replaced the clutch cylinders yet, but I'm not sure if one of them would cause this or not.
with engine off can you shift like normal? Does it seem to go into the gears when off? What you describing sounds like a bad slave OR a bad trans..
Slave will not allow you to press the clutch plate in enough to disengage the shaft. So its very hard to shift with engine running. But yours also sounds like its bound up in there..
Get the trans in to the neutral and be sure its there.. Now crank jeep Press clutch all the way and now try to get in 1s or R.. If the jeep tries to move then its the slave.. simple change out of whole system for about 60 bucks will get you going. BUT if you still can not get out of gear try rocking the jeep a little and try to shift then.

This doesn't sound at all like a clutch issue, but rather like a problem with the transmission. I'd be very curious to know what the transmission fluid level is at and what the fluid looks like (colour, how dark, appears to be full of glitter, etc).
It's been too cold in here in new england to get under there, but today is supposed to be nice. The fluid that came out was dark and was about a quart low (I replaced it 18 months ago when I re-did the clutch.) Nothing much in terms of metal shavings, just a little attached to the magnet in the plug. I'm pulling the tranny today and hoping that I can find something that is easy-ish to fix, but there is a transmission shop near me that can rebuild and put a 3 year warranty on it. Not sure on pricing yet, but I'll probably opt for that over a used one.
Got the skid plate off, detached the rear driveshaft and was pulling out the parts on the inside of the jeep to get access and discovered tat the shift tower is loose and there is fluid there (which is where i must have lost the fluid). Now the debate is weather that was the issue in itself and I should reassemble, or if there are more problems than just that... I suppose I could just do the work to reassemble... worst case I'm only about 14 bolts into this and they will all come out easier if I have to re-disassemble...
It actually sounds a little like it's in more than one gear at the same time.
I know it sounds crazy - but if the shifter tower was loose, it may have allowed the shifter to come out of a shift fork while in gear, and then drop back into the neutral position on another shift fork. So at that point, you won't be able to get it out of the gear it was in, so it will always act like it's in gear, and any gear you put it in will put the transmission in a bind because it will be trying to drive the output at two different ratios. Since it stalls in neutral I'd suspect a higher gear, and since you can move the shifter side by side as normal, I would look specifically at 4th. (middle shaft forward)
I would pull the shifter tower and look down at the shift forks and make sure all 3 are in a straight line. If not, drop the shifter into the fork that is out of place and pull it back into neutral.
This is a Ford transmission, but I would expect the basic idea to be the same. The shifter sits down in those cutouts and moves each shaft forward and backward to engage various gears.
If they ARE all in line and it still doesn't work once it's back together, one of the shifter forks may have broken off with a gear engaged.
I'll check that out, I got it all back together and it's still not working, but when I ease off the clutch in "neutral" I can get it to go forward now (slowly), so maybe this is the problem and while getting te shift tower back together I just changed the gear it was stuck on.
