20,000 Mile Maintenace
Well... as I approach 20,000 miles, I am starting to look for the maintenance that is required for this new milestone (I know, an early one if it is really one). I do know how to do a lot of the work, and my dad also knows, I am just gathering info.
I have used the search function already. I used the TJ FAQ on maintenance, and Fluid Capacity. So here is what I am looking at right now: Oil Change - I do this every 5,000 miles, and the oil comes out a mix between golden brown and dark brown (still pretty good condition). I used to use Fram filters until I read about what crap they have become, I will most likely get a Mopar filter this time since it is like $1 more. Tire Rotation/Chalk Test - I have the original treads from the factory, and they have some dry rot starting to form. They need to be replaced, I know that. My dad and I keep telling my mom that. Air Filter - I bought a Fram air filter for my first oil change at 10,000. The filter looked brand new from the PO, and it was also a Fram, I kept it in there, and checked it last oil change. Still looked almost new. I think I might end up replacing the filter just since I KNOW there is at least 10,000 miles, and recommended replacement is 15,000. Edit: I checked the air filter the other day, and it still looks brand new. No for the stuff I am really confused on: Differentials - When should I change the fluid? When I do actually do it, I may look into a new diff cover because they look better, hold a little more fluid, and a just Awesomely strong. Not sure though depends on $$$. Transmission - I have no idea on when to do anything with this either. I have the 42RLE. When should I start worrying about it? I know Mopar doesn't have the greatest rep for auto's (our history includes a '91 Lebaron with 105k rebuild, a '90 Ram 250 120k blown tranny but it plowed, '01 Grand Caravan rebuild at 125k). T-Case - Again, no idea. I though my T-case was having shifting problems going into 4-Lo, but that was me just not shifting right. I don't know when I should look into fluid swao for that. Plugs and wires - Continuing my ignorance with this one. About when should I look into working over the wires/plugs. Recommended set too. I will NOT be doing all of this work now. I am just trying to gather info. I still have about 1200 miles before I reach the mark. I want to be able to run my Jeep to the ground 500k from now (before replacing any broken parts with new "Upgrades" )Any guides, tips/suggested deviations/part suggestions will be taken into consideration. I have the maintenance book that the PO gave me with the Jeep, but I know many suggest slight deviation due to what really works, or is actually needed. ![]()
