Had this ticking noise start the other day outa the blue, sounds like its coming from under the valve cover and ticks all the time whether engine is cold or warm. the sound speed up as u accelarate. i put synthectic oil in it and no help. anyone got any suggestions.

I would put my money on a loose rocker arm. Have you run the valves?

Did you actually use feeler gauges and check the distance between the valve and rocker. It could also be a bad lifter. That is what I would venture without hearing it.

With hydraulic lifters how much gap would you say is acceptable?

Jake - how loud is it?

Where would you suggest he find the acceptable gap range?

I said you wasted 44 because you over paid for feeler gauges, the link shows a set of craftsmen for much less.

Take take the valve cover off and start it up, if it is in the top end won't be hard to hear/spot which valve or lifter is noisy.

I think he bought lifters not the feeler gauge.

Have you checked your exhaust manifold bolts? Mine have worked themselves loose several times (even lost 2 once).

When they become loose, I would get a light ticking on start-up which would go away once the engine was warm. As soon as I heard it I would pop the hood, crank the loose ones down (usually the two closest to the firewall) and I'd be good for another 2 months.

Hydrualic lifters dont have a gap at the rocker arm once they are pumped up. Only mechanicals have a gap
