2.5 engine compatibility

Hi I'm from the uk and have a 97 TJ 2.5 which needs a new engine. Would one out of a Cherokee fit straight in or is it only engines from the wrangler that will fit?

Thanks Lewis

Any 2.5 from 87-02 will work

Thanks for your help, I thought that they were the same but read a few different things about the Cherokee one being slightly different.

Cheers Lewis

Just curious, how many miles..err kilometers did it have before it went and was there an underlying reason? I have the 2.5L in my '98 and it has 222,000 miles (357,274 kilometers).

Not too sure I bought it with no water pump on the engine but it was on the passenger seat and was obvious the bearing had gone so replaced it with a new one ran it up to temp and checked dip stick and low and behold water in the oil

The engine only has 72,000 miles on the clock so really low compared to most, can only assume old pump failed and threw belt which overheated the motor
