Everything is 91 except the motor and tranny. They are out of a 97 TJ

Advice for engine to swap into 2000

The time has come to start looking for a powerplant to swap for the 2.5 in my 2000, I know the wiring harness compatability ranges from '97-'99 and '00+ (I think thats what you mentioned). I was just wondering if it had to be an XJ motor would '97-'99 be my only option as they went distributorless in '00. Or does this not matter at all?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated thanks

Hey guys love the swap! Im trying to swap my YJ 2.5 to a 4.0...Im assuming I'll also need new motor mounts and factory frame mounts? If so, whats a good way of finding those parts numbers??

goto local dealer and tell them that you need the frame side motor mounts for a year X YJ with 4.0 and they can pull them up

86/7 Cherokee to 93 YJ

I have found a dirt cheap 86/7 Cherokee 4.0L that is begging to be swapped. The guy is telling me that its the 4.0 but I am very afraid that it is the 258. Short of the torque upgrade that would make this swap not worth it almost. I have a 93 YJ with the 2.5 and just about everything stock when I bought it minus some 33's and a few inches of shackle lift im trying to get rid of in favor of an SOA. The donor cherokee still runs and everything even after being rolled, leaving the vehicle worthless, to all but us squirrel owners. I am hoping that because I have an entire donor vehicle that this should be an easier swap to do than yours was RnEmOvr. The owner said that it is an 86 with the 4.0 I6, but I was under the impression that the I6 came out in 87 with the YJ's.

So I have rambled on for lines and lines now and I guess I'm just asking for general thoughts on this situation. I realize that the traditional engine swap is to go newer. But the price is so very right on this, and I am getting just about everything that I am going to need all in one. I should be getting pictures coming my way shortly (hopefully of the guts, but I don't know).

So one final update. I have just recently found a couple of other cherokees that are going for a bit more money (about twice as much) but not quite out of the question. and these all definitely have the 4.0L. I'm thinking that the 4.0 is worth the extra 400ish. How about all of you?

Let me know what you all think.

i would spend the extra $400 and get the better motor as you must also think the roll may have pulled the pin on a ticking time bomb

Best thing to do is get a 97 to 99 harness.
Does anyone know if the ALL 00+ engine/computer/harness can plug into the harness coming from the cab controlling the dash, etc? From what I understand as long as you have the complete engine/computer/engine harness you can swap it whether or not the original year was distributorless or not.

Thanks

I can't believe that I couldn't find this with a search. I'm lookoing at putting a 4.0 out of a 2000 XJ to put into my 97 TJ. Why won't the dash harness work? I've got the motor harness and PCM from the XJ so that's all good, but I really don't want to re-wire the dash.

Im new here to the forum, and hate to bring back such an old thread, but can anyone tell me, did you or do you have to relocate the new motor mounts for the bigger 4.0l from a 2.5l in a 1997 Tj?
Thanks for any advice or knowledge..

Yes, they have to be moved. There are pictures in this thread. Really worth the read from the beginning if you're considering doing the swap.

Nobody will mind if you resurrect an old thread for a legit reason.

I'm quite sure that they do need to be moved. Not positive, but I believe so. Might want to wait for Randy or someone else to comment.
