1st Off Road Excursion

Well, I finally got the new-to-me Rubi out this weekend for some light/medium off road fun. I was in Broken Bow, OK at a state park with some very fun old logging roads and the Rubi did great. Over trees, rocks, you name. Even got the wife out and my 18 month old actually fell asleep in his seat while being tossed about. Breaking him in nicely I suppose.

OK...questions (this is the tech forum afterall).
1. Is 1st gear in low range for the most extreme of rock crawling? I found myself never using it at all. Mostly in second and third and the Rubi climbed nicely up some very steep grades with slick rocks (shale?) that was loose.

2. Does treking in low range affect clutch travel or the synchros? I found that I was pushing the clutch in farther to keep the gears from grinding during gearchange.

Anyhow, it was a great time and I am very impressed at what this thing will do in stock trim. Thanks and I can't wait to get some pics up. Just 45 more posts to go...HA!

I'm not sure how good of an answer I can provide, but I'll give it a shot. I've got a 00 TJ, so I don't have the added benefit of the 4:1 t-case like your Rubi does. Even still, I hardly ever use first gear in 4LO unless I am climbing up some really nasty stuff. Most times I am usually in 2nd, as the Jeep can climb up most things pretty well with just that. I think my ratio is like 2.72:1 (though not positive). Most people use 1st gear in 4LO pretty much only if it's some really difficult stuff or if they are coming down a really steep downhill.

I have no idea as far as the second question though... but keep posting away so we can see pics!

With my 4 cylinder I use 1 gear and 4-lo to climb moderatly steep hills. I use second gear for most else. I would imaging that the lower gearing of the rubi and the 6 cylinder would mean that first would only be needed for a really steep ascent.

SUPER low 1st gears are for going super slow for added control, or at least as I see it. Right now my Jeep will flip over backwards before running out of power going up a hill. However, I would love a 4:1 t-case so my 1st gear would be useable at a slower, more controlable speed.

First gear is also good for those of us inflicted with 3.07s

I don't know anything about the ratios or fun stuff like that. I'm still too green around the gills.
