06 4cyl.

Since the Search Button is down. I'm probably going to be buying a Wrangler in the next couple of weeks. How does the 4cyl. do? I have a 94 Grand 4x4 V-8 for all my towing needs. Just wondering how the 4-Banger Wrangler will handle mountains, bridges, hwy driving, and off road. Dealership has two new ones 6speed, cd, air, soft top, $17,985. Does this sound ok.
Thanks

...and the dealership will probably still have them in a few months. The 4-cylinder is just not enough motor for a Jeep. Sure, it will move the Jeep and perform great off-road, but you'll be wishing you had another couple holes when you hit the highways or climb any long grades. Hold out for the 6

I edited your thread title to read 06 rather than 96.

You will hate the 4cyl. Buy the 6 and a D44.

I've taken trips to the beach in my 4 cyl 2.5 through the Blue Ridge mountains, WV Turnpike and all and never had a problem. Might have to downshift to 4th on long grades. I do admit that sometimes I'd like to have a 6 just for when I'm loaded down with passengers and hunting gear. Also I've heard the 2.4 is less of an engine than the 2.5. So I'd say get a 6 cyl.

I've owned both. The four banger does OK off road as long as the gearing/tires match. On road it's a dog.

Having said that. I would consider a used four popper if the price was right (read dirt cheap!) and they usually are.

But if you are looking to spend mid to high teens, find a good used 4.0.

Your brand new four cylinder will depreciate like crazy the minute you drive it off the lot.

My .02.

Yeah, other than being cheaper, there are no appreciable benefits to getting the 4-banger. Even the 6 to me in my '98 can feel slightly underpowered at times. Also, the gas mileage is pretty much the same.

test drive both engines and you will understand why everyone says to go with the 6 cyl. there are situations where the 4 cyl is "sufficient" but also situations where it is insufficient. also consider the difference in resale value and the similarity in mpg.

Pick a different reason because that one is both lame and stupid to perpetuate.

I appreciate all ofthe feedback. Might have to make a trip to Houston to look. Locally there is a 2000 with 25k miles, garage kept, all options hard&softtop. This one literally has never seen rain or mud. sound bar, lockable rear storage, hard top lift, 6cyl. waiting for the owner to come up with a price. It literally is showroom condition

Drive one and decide for yourself.
My experience with the 2.4L motor and five-speed has been quite satisfactory, especially in highway driving.
YMMV.
Thanks

I bought a Jeep because I like Jeeps. If you want something with power, don't buy a jeep. Niether the the 4 banger or 6 banger have all that much power. I have had two 4 bangers and one 4.0L wrangler. They are all dogs, just gotta know how to flog them dogs.
