00' tj sport stuck with exhaust submerged. need advice

I wish I had pics for this thread but last night was the first time I got her suck bad enough to need a pull out.

long story short I ended up stuck at a slight incline with muddy water just up to the side step with the front end facing down. I heard the exhaust underwater so I freaked out thinking it was going to go up the exhaust and seize the engine so I put her in neutral and held the rpms at around 3500-3900 for about 5 minutes until my friend in his xj pulled me out. It may have just been better to shut her off and wait it out but its over and done with now

afterstuck: I opened to hood and shut the engine off right after after he pulled me out. (it was idling fine no banging or seizing sounds) but the engine coolant was BOILING. I sat there for a long while just letting everything cool off. It didnt leak out or anything and eventually it cooled off and the level of fluid was actually still normal. all the gauges are reading ok. I just need some advice from veterans out there as to what I should do? I know if I go to a jiffy lube place and tell them the story they would want to run every test and do every flush and cleaner they have on it so please help.

If you need any more information just let me know

You didn't hurt anything. Hell you could of let it idle. No way for water to go up the exhaust while its running.
I use to run a A/C converter from my Jeep. I would stick a brick on the gas petal. Turning about 3k for hours. I went in once and the brick slipped and was causing the engine to hit rev limiter for about 30 minutes. No harm no foul.

But you should of let it idle for a few more minutes to help cool it down. the boil over was just cause of that reason. The water around the engine was still very hot and once shut down, it was not moving any more.
But you fine.
Check your axles for water in them.

Sound advice. Idling would have been fine. Check all your fluids. Oil, transmission, transfer case, and diffs. Also check out your air filter.

Yep, no problems running (either idling or high rpms) with the exhaust underwater. Remember that lots of boats run their exhaust underwater permanently. They basically use the water as their muffler.

I put my exhaust far underwater 3 or 4 times a week all last summer while launching my boat. (This year it's in a slip so no need.) No worries at all, in fact you don't even need to leave it running, the pipe going over the rear axle acts as an air trap. But - idling is still safer...
