I installed a Painless factory harness kit in my '84 Cali-emissions CJ7. The install was anything BUT painless since I had to integrate the engine control computer and all the emissions stuff. Spent several days just on the engine bay as I basically had to chase each original wire, make my own diagram (my FSM did not have the factory wiring diagrams) and then figure out where it would fit best in the Painless harness. The maxi fuse takes the place of the fusible link wires in the original harness, so you need to do one or the other for safety reasons. I also remember the Painless diagrams being a bit confusing when it came to wiring in the Ford ignition module, then again, I was dealing with the computer there as well. Oh, if I remember correctly, the directions were reversed for wiring up the electronic oil pressure gauge on the dash, but it sounds like you don't have one. Good luck!

ok update and few more questions and one bonehead move corrected.

First off thanks for all the helpful replies.
I figured out the 4 wires this was my bonehead bit
it was the wiring that goes to the ignition switch

Now for the update, I had a family friend over this weekend he looked it over and gave me the green light for what I had wired in the engine and the head and tail lights.

I have some new questions.
headlight switch Im lost with out a diagram

can anyone tell me what wire goes where if the picture is good enough?

Turn signals
again without having any reference I have no way of connecting

how do I check these? which one is the power source so I can maybe hook them up by trial and error.

speedometer cluster

there is a dbl wire on the turn signals lights is this for front and back or is this for ground wires? also on the fuel gauge I had 3 wires connected to the right side post and one to the left side post. Im assuming the third post is a ground

Any advise would be much appreciated
Thanks

The black strap between the water temp and the fuel gauge on the back of the cluster is ground. I will get you some schematics tonight.

Nope, that is a power line, the case is the ground.

Man I just put a Centech harness in mine and it went in really easily and sweet. All the lines were marked and the book had excellent drawings for the speedo cluster and other dash parts.

It was really 'painless'.

Did the kit not come with a headlight switch plug? That sucks the big one. John Strenk has the pinout for the switch.

I beginning to think I did not have everything for the painless wiring kit. the kit came with the Jeep when I bought it and it was in two different boxes along with the body lift kit the whole thing looked like it had been stitting out in the weather for a yr or two. So maybe I'm missing some of the diagrams.

I do have anohther question do I have to use the maxifuse on this model yr Jeep? Its a 74 with a 258 engine? No power sterring no AC

Painless makes two kits for this era Jeep, a pre-terminated one which has all of the factory ends including the headlight switch, and new speedo bulbs and sockets, stuff like that, and a non-terminated one which would require you to splice into your factory plugs. Looks like you have the second one. Did you save any of your old plugs?

Not the same as many others. If you can send me a nice picture of the front and back I'll illuminate it and use it for future reference.

Check again, The TS should only have one wire unless the bulb is in the wrong place. Usually those with two wires were for the brake warning light. There may even be a Alternator warning light in there someplace.

Show me a picture of the front of your speedo and we will figure this out.

in the mean time here is a nice copy of a 74-75 schematic:

Most of them were in such bad shape that they fell apart in my hands as I was disconnecting them or they were melted because of the bad rewiring. There was so much splicing to the original wiring that with the exception of the turn signal clip most everything else was removed or cliped to within 6" of it end connection point. The dash was the worst. It looked like there had been a fire under the dash at some point, Lots of melted wires and connections.
This is why Im lost for making the connections to everything under the dash. I was trying to save the turn signal clip and after taking a closer look at it last night Im not real sure I want to leave that clip on. Ill just cut it off and splice the new wires in.

Thank you very much for the diagrams!!!!!

Those will help me greatly. If you don't mind me asking where can I find those on the net so in the future I can just pull them up on my laptop?

As for the speedo cluster it is very possible I have the bulbs in the wrong place as my son was the one who removed them with out paying attenttion to where they came out of. This thing has been a learning lesson for him and me both Me learning to breath deep and explain in great detail to my son what I want or am trying to do and him learning how a car works. He's 14 and thinking this is going to be his ride for school in a cpl of yrs

I will post a picture of the front side after I get home tonight.

Again thank you for the diagrams!!!!!!!

One other thing I just thought of. I did not see any wires coming off the master cylinder for the brake lights I now this may sound like a dumb question to many of you but I really don’t have a clue as to how the brake light gets triggered when I hit the brake peddle

Thank you
Clueless!!!!!!!

It's on the brake pedal. Look at ares 8A on the link in my post for the schematic.
Look on your brake pedal up near the pivot point.

If you want to save the pictures just right click on the picture and save them to your computer.

1974 CJ5 wiring diagram

You can download a wiring diagram with a table of connections for the 1974 CJ5 from here:
http://vectorid.com/jeep/1974_jeep_cj5_wiring_diagram.pdf
It's from the technical service manual.

For anyone doing future wiring jobs...Painless is very expensive, go to Home of EZ Wiring, they have harness sets with great instructions for around $150-$170 pending how many fuses you want, plus every 6 inches on the wire they tell you where the wire goes, so when playing with the wires down the road you can look at the wire and indentify what your looking at.

2X that, I've done three vehicles with the EZ Wire kits and have one ready for installation in my '71, great kits and are EZ.
