Your Painless Wiring Job Photos

I have the Painless wiring kit for a 74 CJ5. I have a little experience wiring cars, never a passenger car. What I’m looking for is any of you with a straight 6, If you could show me some pictures of the wiring and how it turned out. I’m finding that there is allot less wiring in the engine compartment then what I pulled out and that has me a bit confused. I’m following the instructions the best I can and everything seems to be correct. I’m not finished yet to be able to start it up as I still have the dash and the tail light left to finish. I do realize some of the left over wires are for accessories I do not have on this jeep but I have no clue if what I did wire up is correct or not. I looking for any examples of how it has been done to see if I did it right

Any photos of your wiring job would be much appreciated

Thanks
Jeff

I usually do my own wiring. But if you follow the directions everything should be right

With wiring it's hard to say one way is right and one way is wrong. If everything works for your application, then it's right. If it also happens to be pretty, that's an extra!

I did a Painless upgrade a few years ago. I am an electrical engineer and have been playing around with electrons since 1983 and I have to say the painless wiring harness is a no-brainer.

Just follow the instructions any you will not have any problems.

Well I would have to argue with that, some people try to wire stuff without fueses and relays. May work for thier application but in the long run they might end up with a burnt vehicle.

I have seen some of those Painless wiring kits and they are very detailed and complete. I don't think you should be short of anything. Did your jeep have an BBD carb and all the emission wiring and stuff like that in it before you started? That is the only thing that I can think of that would not be included in your kit.

Here is my wiring right now:

If you post some pics of things you need help with or do not think are right, maybe I can help you.

Here is what I have done so far. Using Manual #90504 part #10105-12 circuit Jeep Harness(74 & Earlier)

Dont know if these pictures show it well enough or not but I used the Figure 10.1 Ford Ignition(start/Run) System and instructions. I do not know if I need to install the maxi fuse or not for this engine, if so no big deal to splice it in still. I know very little about this motor other then it is stock and had the top end redone about 4K miles ago.

This is a set of wires that are labled to be in the engine section and 1 is labeled B+ which I have seen in the manual but have no clue if it needs to be tied in. The other 4 wires(Pnk,Brn,Tan & Org wires) I think are to things I do not have on this jeep according to thier labels.

in this area I used the Figure 8.2 Motorola Charging System Diagram and instructions. Am I supposed to have a wire going to the battery area from this because right now I dont????????

Also and unless I missed it I have nothing hooked up to the temp sensor yet!

The head lights and tail lights my 12yr old son could have done so Im confident in those being done right. even set it up for a trailer already and a wench on the front and back when the time come to buy one.
So this is where im at as of today. I have the dash to finish in fact I have not even started it yet saving the worst for the last but even looking at it I going to have a ton of extra wires left over.

Thanks for taking a look!

I did the painless kit on my 80 5 and I hate wiring, but when i fired her up for the first time in 2 years on saturday everything worked except the oil pressure gauge which has a sender problem and has never worked. Even my fuel gauge works. Its labeled and the instructions are usefull enough and they give you more wire then you need so if you mess up theres extra. I took the extra and wire tied it out of the way so if i break a wire in the future i can cut it, pull the wire out and repair it without loosing length.

Actually, the dash is the easiest part lol. Engine compartment wiring and the charging system are kinda complicated. I am gonna do some research on those questions you asked and get back with you tomorrow. I need to find a painless wiring schematic to look at. Post up anymore you got and I'll try to answer them.

ok I found the temp wire and made that connection but when I found that wire I also found wire #721 says it goes to the 4WD switch and the oil pressure switch wire. The funny thing is this engine does not have that type of sending unit, it has a clear plastic tube that runs from the block to the oil gauge in the dash Also I thought this thing was manual. I see some wires coming from the top of the transmission or transfer case, I did not get under to chase them tonight but does anyone have an Idea what they go to or why there would be a wire to the 4WD????

It sounds to me like you have a mechanical oil pressure guage rather than an oil pressure sender than sends an electrical signal to an electrical oil pressure guage. Someone swapped this in. Wires going towards the trans are probably for the backup lights. Switch is located on top of the trans usually. As far as a light for 4WD, I know my 83 doesn't have an indicator light. You need a Factory service manual. If you search this forum, someone took the time to scan the entire manual in. It's up there free. You just got to look for it. It has complete wiring diagrams.

Yep he must have a mechanical gauge for the oil pressure. Wires to the trans are the back up lights as said, and the wires to the transfer case are for the 4wd indicator light. Your 83 should have one on the right of the speedo cluster I believe.

I have a website that I use with the FSM on there. Here is the link:

And for wiring:

Enjoy!
