YJ spring conversion on a CJ

Has anybody done a YJ spring conversion on a CJ? I am looking for a softer hiway ride for my 78 CJ-7. It has the wide axles. Before you you take me to task for wanting a better on-road ride please understand that I bought this Jeep new in 1977 and have been the only driver/owner. That makes me an old f@rt!

I just did the YJ to CJ Spring conversion. http://www.bds-suspension.com/pdfs/124021.pdf These are the instructions for the BDS conversion kit that I bought. I went with the kit because it had eveything that I needed. I also used a YJ 2" BDS suspension kit with the conversion kit with YJ BDS shackles. It has made for a great ride. Just read the instructions and follow carefully. It will be a weekend project as long as your neighbor doesn't bug you too much, like mine did!

Thanks CJ Fan.

On a scale of "1 to 10" how would you rate your ride now with the original CJ springs being a "5"?

Done that to mine also. I just ground the rivet and made a bolt hole, got a new hanger and moved it forward to the new hole, new shackle and bushings. Half a day job with good help. Cant say anything for the ride, mine is on bias swampers so ride quality is out.

I would have to say a good 9. The YJ BDS springs seem a little stiffer but a much better ride. My Jeep is mainly used on the road as a weekend driver. The springs almost seem like the Jeep is rolling thru the bumps in the road rather than dropping into them, if that makes sense.

I had to grind out the rivet as well to move the front shackle hanger forward. I also had to replace the springs plates for the 2 1/2" wide springs and grind down part of the axle housing to make the ubolts fit. The BDS kit came with everything needed including the steering box shims. The rear springs went on with no trouble at all. I still replaced the rear spring plates and ubolts. They were with the kit.

I forgot to ask about how much lift you get. I have a 1" body lift and only need to clear 33" tires. Also, did it change the wheel base? I heard it moves the front axle up 3/4" and the rear axle back 3/4".

I am not real sure exactly how much lift I have. I know my fat a$$ has to grab and pull to get in. I think I got about 3 1/2" to 4" of lift out of it. The springs are 2" and I was told that the shackles that I have gave me about 1 3/8" lift as well. I am now looking to put 32's on it. 33's might fit, but I don't want to chance it. I still want to get it in the garage. Right now with crap tires, I have about six inches from the top of my roll bar to the garage opening. I went with the BDS Conversion Kit because I had already purchased the suspension lift kit for a YJ that I had. I ended up parting ways with it and went to http://www.bds-suspension.com to look into installing them on my CJ7. The conversion was perfect for what I needed. A little costly, but worth it. I have a local shop here that can me the parts that I need pretty quick and also saved me some money.

I think that the axles did move a little, but I can't tell and I am not positive. The wheels still look centered to the wheel wells. Once I get the 32's that I have planned to get, I should be able to tell you more.

Hey CJ fan,

I'm still trying to figure out what lift to go with. I went to to the BDS site and I can't find an option for a YJ conversion kit. Is that standard on their kits, or do I have to call them? Thanks...

Mudslide,

Go to http://www.bds-suspension.com/php/Order_by_pn.php and type in part number 124021. This will take you to the price and information section with the installation instructions. I ended up downloading and saving there entire catalog in pdf format. Here is a picture of the kit that I bought.
