Not to mention the width of the wheel and air pressure can make a huge difference. Here is my spare tire unmounted next to one on my vehicle (granted worn) look at the tire height difference!

Guys, I agree the loaded tire height dimension Matt provided may vary a little between his AT and my KM2 but its a start. I will check their website to see if the unloaded diameter is close.

I don't think the loaded height makes a difference. The tire will be the same distance from the top of the tire to the body, isn't that what the concern is.

Bill,

BFG indicates the AT is 31.7" in diameter and the KM2 is 31.8", so I will say equal.

I will jack up the jeep so the sill is 22" above the concrete and that should give me a good visual of the 2.5" lift that Matt is running on my Jeep.

That will give me a known baseline even thought it's not stock.

I can take a few photos and raise it another .5" to simulate a 3" lift and 1.5" to simulate a 4" lift.

Matt,

I assume the dimension is 21" at the front of the rocker trim and the rear, I believe I have about 1.5" of rake on mine due to the front spring sag.

I could also throw on some air bags

Sheesh, Dave, you are really being precise about this decision....

Here's my exact measurements:

Ground to bottom of rocker trim in rear = 22-3/8"

Ground to bottom of rocker trim in front = 22-1/4"

So, I have about 1/8" of rake.

Matt,

Please check your tape measure and see if the hook on the end of the tape is loose, that could account for the 1/8" difference if it moved while you were measuring

Just kidding, don't go check

It's raining here and dark too, I will look at it maybe tomorrow if the rain lets up.

You are not kidding, I had to race home while the sun was going down to take some pictures. Thanks to Matt, I have a baseline, in the first photo, the rear of the rocker is 22" above the concrete, the front is 20.5" and the top of the tires are 31.25" above the concrete, close enough for comparison.

Second picture is with the front raised to get the rocker level at 22" simulating a 2.5" lift and the third is raised front and rear to 23.5" simulating a 4" lift.

The last looks good to me and if it settled a bit it would still be fine, what do ya'll think?

Dave,

I think both look fantastic!

Here's what I scratched my noggin over when I was in your shoes:

1. Additional mods that the 4" requires
2. Ride quality: taller = rougher riding
3. Looks: taller = better looking

Ride quality and desire to keep the steering and driveline components stock won, over looks.

Those springs are sure flat, I can see why you want to do the change.

The second one looks pretty good, enough clearance between body and tyre. It will feel like a whole new vehicle.

IMHO the 4" lift is only worth doing if you are going to increase the tyre size again. Otherwise you have the same clearance to the diff but all sorts of new challenges to make the 4" lift work.

If the rear is sitting at 22" now, adding 4" of lift would make it 26", not 23.5". Of the 2 CJ 7's I have, after the lift was installed they sat level. If this is the norm for spring lifts, it's going to raise the front to 26" as well. I would add another 1" for new springs, and who knows how long it takes for them to settle. I'm staying with my post of 2.5".

The Jeep does look good in the pictures Dave.

I read it as yours was sitting at 22", at the rear. So my mistake I guess. Matt also has a hard top, so depending on when he took the measurements...

Wondering if you got in the Jeep while it was on the jacks.

I also don't think new springs would ride as well as the worn out springs currently on your Jeep. Mine with 3" springs doesn't ride as well as the DD with worn springs.
