Would a 4" lift look goofy with 32's?
After a spin around the neighborhood yesterday, I realized just how choppy the ride is with the old and sagging factory springs and how bad I want to have the lift on before I start driving the CJ to work.

In my mind I was thinking 2.5" would be plenty and started searching for the best price on the Black Diamond YJ kit and read that Black Diamond used to be Warn but they are now owned by Superlift, and the springs may be Superlift.

Searching for other lifts, I see Rubicon Express has a decent deal with shocks and springs and it's offered in 2.5" and 4".

Considering the 2.5" lift is suggested for 31" tires, a 4" lift may be better with my 32's.

Just curious if a 4" lift would look balanced with 32's.

my old 81 cj5 had a 4" on 32's and road/drove around fine

32s with a 2.5" look better to me. I just think 4" with 33 and 2.5 with 31-32 looks more balanced. Neither of them look 'bad'. But you will notice the tire to wheel well size/distance/stance will look better with 2.5"

I went with a 2.5" YJ lift and 32"s because I didn't want to mess with modifying steering and driveline components, extending brake lines, t-case drops, etc, etc...

Personally, I think the combo provides the perfect balance between stock and stupid looking. :thumbsup:

I actually ran 32s on stock suspension and they only rubbed a little on rear wheel well when wheeling. A 2.5" lift is about perfect for 32's.

Also recommend a YJ spring conversion as long as your doing a lift. A bit more work and a few more parts to buy, but well worth it. Smoother ride than any CJ spring you'll find. IMHO:)

i have 32" MRT's on a 4" lift and it does not look bad, but a agree with the above, a 2.5" lift would be fine.

get a jack under the front and rear bumper and push the jeep up about 4 inches higher than stock. Stand back and have a look, see if you like the stance :-)

Good point Daniel.


My springs are sagging so to get a baseline, please post your actual tire height and the height of your tub sill at the front and rear at each fender flare.

I can look at it at the height yours is sitting and then jack it up another 1.5" to simulate a 4" lift.

I still don't understand how BFG gets away with selling 32" tires that only measure 30.5" brand new. :dunno:

Dave, remember your factory springs are sagging from when it left the factory. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if a 4" lift would raise your Jeep 5".

The only picture I have that's close to a 2.5" lift is this one.

This a 3" black diamond with full 33" tires.

As you can see the front fenders have been cut (because of rust) . The rear is untouched.

No tire (radial) will be the same height with weight on it. If one were to jack up the vehicle until the tire is just touching the ground. Then take a measurement, do the same without the jack, I'll bet you would see a 1" difference at least.

very true Bill! A friend of mine and I put on a set of 4" springs on his old K5 blazer, the springs and almost everything were all original (took us weeks to get all the bolts removed!) Once we were done, the truck was actually about 6 inches higher than where it sat before, the old springs were so flat. The original front springs were actually worse than flat, they were bent the other way, haha!
