Hope I save you some $$$ - and your eternal soul.
Thought of the harmonic balancer - Used this one and and was very pleased - I'd encourage you not to reuse the original.
Knowing about the tube and tool, the matched dizzy gear set, the good SBE gaskets (by the way I think I have an oil pan set if you need them), JeepHammer's oil pump housing rebuild and anything else I remember might limit the times you take the Lord's name in vain - thus saving you soul.
Bill - if Matt doesn't need the tool you're welcome to it. I can't see needing it again for several years... Just floating around the tool box.
Matt:
Don't know if you've found this yet but if you read all of the Hammer's and Strenks' posts you'll really enhance your rebuild.
Hammer's stuff (there's more if you search his signature):
LINK: BASIC WIRING 101.
LINK: AMC V-8 Front Cover Recondition,
LINK: Tuning An AMC V-8,
And Strenk: Go to this post and find his signature - save every word this man has ever written.

08JGCOilBurner,
Dude, I wish I could buy you the adult beverage of your choice, right now.
I ordered my Bulltear dipstick and tube. For $45, I hope I get the install correct the first time. I would love to borrow your tool for the job.
I will review your links in the morning. I have to admit, Hammer's posts often make my eyes glaze over, but I will try to follow his advice on the oil pump upgrade.
And, yes, Strenk knows his sh!t.
Matt

When I inherited the jeep maintenance when I met my wife he is the reason I joined this forum. He does have posts on other's, though. Jeephammer too as "Team Rush". Kind of followed both I guess.

The wear pattern on your cam looks pretty good. I'd like to see a main and rod bearing as well. Be sure and check the pivot ball and the base of your rocker arms for wear, heat spots, galling, etc.
Nice job on keeping things separated

Shawn,
Thank you, my friend. I was hoping you were checking in, periodically.
I'll try to post the pics of the parts you mentioned, later today.
At this stage, I'd like to begin discussion of possible upgrades to the Greasy Pig. I don't want to go crazy, here, but I'd like a modest performance improvement over stock. I want a strong, reliable, engine that is both capable on the pavement and the trail. I don't want to pop wheelies, but it would be nice to chirp the tires, for once.
Which upgrades do you feel give the biggest bang for the buck? I notice a lot of guys replace the stock intake manifold with an aluminum one. Is this for ascetics or performance? How about exhaust? Cam? What are some other improvements that won't break the bank?
Thanks, and I hope all is well.
Matt

Yeah, I've been
I have plenty of thoughts (imagine that, lol) about the right engine combo and I'll post them up soon.
Right now, I'm trying to figure out what the hell happened last night and I kind of feel like my ex-fiance. I vaguely remember going to the store for the third bottle of wine and, for some unGodly reason, I decided to dye my hair blonde.
So I went to bed a drunk blonde and woke up as a hung over red head. WTF!
Last time I pulled a stunt like this, I woke up in a manner that would've made Charlie Sheen proud but this just doesn't make any sense
Good Lord, son...

The weight savings switching to the aluminum intake saves about 50mpg.
I'm good at math like Shawn.

Wow - I was feeling pretty lonely as I busted the second of three new dipsticks on our rebuild.
THE TRUTH IS OUT THERE! There's alot of dipsticks!
OK so you guys can easily make a tool... I wasn't going for looks - apologies to Jim, Strenk and the Hammer. I am a better student - but not by the third try . If you listen closely you can hear the foul language eminating from this battle scared 5/16th....
Took a 5/16th deep 1/4 drive and ground down the side so it would slip around the new dipstick. Wrecked the second because I didn't angle the base. Cut it at 70 degrees to the unground side of the socket - and easy as pie...
Bulltear didn't offer the sitck when we rebuilt - I used a Jeg's (IIRC) and it required some narrowing to fit in addition to this tool. The collar (flare?) is very weak on the generic so if it doesn't want to go grind a little more. I'm sure the Bulltear is an improvement.

Matt, I hope to have my all stock 360 in my Quadra-trac Jeep by the end of next week. It's replacing a stock 158 with 133,xxx miles. I'm running 4.10 gears, 33/13.50/15 LTB's, lockers front and rear.
I'll be sure to let you know how it runs.
Bill
On edit, this is the first mistake I've made in 15 years, haaha. When I got the 360, it had a cast 2 bbl manifold. I had a Edelbrock aluminum manifold from another 304, so I put it on, along with a quadrajet carburetor. I am also using the stock distributor with a MSD 6-1a box, ford large cap, MSD wires, and a Ford coil. Factory exhaust manifolds with mufflers similar to flow master 40, and no cat.
Bill

look at the last pic on post 84.
See the # 2 main? See the bright easily-readable "2" ? Those are usually cast on the mains but that one looks nice and sharp like it was "stamped" into it.
Thinking maybe it was stamped in a prior teardown and marked.
Just being devil's advocate to be on the alert for possible oversizes and markings on pistons, rods, and mains.
