The World's Ugliest AMC 360.....
....is now sitting in my garage. I've named it the Greasy Pig
Here's the story. I responded to a Craigslist ad offering the engine for $500. After playing phone tag with the guy for a few days, I finally got ahold of him and made arrangements to see it, yesterday.
The owner, an Army major, said the engine is from an "insanely low mileage" (whatever that means) J10 pickup. He intended to use it for his own CJ project, but he got re-deployed to the Middle East before he could complete the swap. He ended up selling the CJ project and bought an already built YJ instead. So he had this engine without a home for it.
My first impression was disappointment. The Major hadn't even bothered to clean the thing up beforehand, which is one of my pet peeves. I was just about ready to walk away, when I decided to play some lowball, and I offered him $300.
To my surprise, he took my offer. He also threw in a brand new set of Bombproof CJ motor mounts, and 2 service manuals!! Wow!
I got the Greasy Pig home, today. First I stripped a few parts to lighten it up, then fired up my custom cherry picker (aka: a tractor), and surprisingly got it on an engine stand, easily.
Assuming its a good core, my plan is to do a moderate performance re-build, perhaps spruce it up with a little bling, then drop it in my CJ7 when the time comes.
I hope to document the entire re-build here, step by step. It will be my first. My updates will be targeted at the novice mechanics, like me, but I hope you experienced engine-builders will chime in to answer my inevitable questions.
I'm looking forward to sharing a little virtual grease with you all.
Matt

If you back out the cost of the brand new mounts I got in the deal, mine comes in around $150

I just picked one up for $250. It's very clean and supposed to be low mileage and I thought it was a good deal. I'm gonna do the same as you, a mild rebuild. Now get started so I can take notes

Subscribed! I would love to rebuild mine when the time comes! Which is rapidly approaching. I need serious valve work now.

I think we've all had a greasy pig at one time or another... errr... was that a dirty pig? I digress.
Anywho, right on man
With all of the guys who've subscribed and want to follow your build, maybe some of the experienced 360 builders will pop in with some words of wisdom and maybe post up some helpful links and threads regarding some of the 360 nuances like the oiling system, timing chain/water pump cover, oil pump housing clearances, etc.
You guys can make this one heck of a useful thread.
Shawn

Sounds like a good price Matt. I do wonder about the low mileage with the engine that greasy.
If it does'nt use bridges on the rocker arms. its pre 1975.
