won't stay put when parked on a hill

so,

when i park on a hill, i put my cj-8 in gear (usually 1st, but sometimes reverse). it will not stay put. rather it lurches and stops until on level ground. whats up here? somebody has suggested bad engine compression, and no real way to fix it. any ideas?

Low compression is the cause of that but you need to remember that it is called a parking brake, not an emergency brake. In gear with the parking brake should be able to hold it and if you think back to your original driving classes, you will remember the reasoning behind turning your wheels towards the curb when parked on a hill.

It means the engine is getting tired. Buy, rent or barrow a compression tester and see what you've got. Be sure to pull all the spark plugs, throttle held wide open, crank the engine and record the 5th reading on the tester. Do this for every cylinder. Then add a tablespoon of oil to the cylinder and do it again. Fairly simple to run. Write everything down and let us know the results.

The problem is compounded if you have high rearend gears and big tires. Put it in low range.

Bad compression means that your motor is nearing the end of it's life and needs to be rebuilt or replaced. You will notice lack of power, and no downhill compression on steep hills. If you have a inline six it probably has close to 300,000 miles on it which is excellent for a motor, those things are hard to kill! It's probably just played out and could use a good rebuild!
