Windows 8 Help (Java)

Got this "new and improved" POS HP around a month ago and I need Java to view my trading charts. I figured out that Java has to be downloaded from the Desktop instead of that boggled abortion "Apps" page that someone thought would be cool and things have been good for a few weeks.

Well this morning, right in the middle of a trading session, the charts all went blank. Actually only the part that requires Java. The charting company said everything was fine on their end and recommended uninstalling and reinstalling the latest Java. So I did... over and over. I tried through IE 10 and Google Chrome. I installed Firefox and still nothing.

I tried a restore point from yesterday and still no-go. The restore point didn't work for some file name longer than your arm that it couldn't find, fix... something.

Anyways, I really don't like Windows 8 but I'm stuck with it and hoping that someone here can help fix my woes. The last thing in the world I want to do is pull out the credit card and speak to someone that I can't understand from a Windows call center in India.

Please help a brotha out

Shawn

Your on your own Shawn, not only do I not have a clue, I don't even want one!

If your needing to replace some "windows" I can help with those. And wasn't Firefox a movie with Clint Eastwood?

Ps, does HP stand for high pinion,

Bill

I miss XP! I chatted with some kid from Geek Squad and he was pretty iffy about Java working well with W8 and various charting sites. Free troubleshoot though.

Indeed it was, Bill. Between Firefox, The Hunt for Red October, vodka and russian wives dot com, we've stolen all their good stuff Thanks for at least commenting, guys. I was leery about W8 from the beginning but that's the way the trend is going and I didn't have another choice.

I'm completely unqualified for this task so wish me luck.

Well at least us old guys can keep it bumped to the top! Bill is much older than me though but after 50 it don't matter when it comes to computers.

Haven't they been talking about recalling Windows 8? Trends are just that...why can't software designers just think in pratical terms. Computer problems makes me want to put a carbeurator on my CJ instead of EFI.

I lost 2 years worth of cycle pics and dyno sheets along w/my CJs' Dyno charts w/W8. It is the sux. Right now I get "session ended"...error at line 1...etc...all the time.
I'm buying a new machine (Luv Dell, hate HP) but it will NOT have W8!

I HATE 8 !!!
I just got a new Dell laptop with Win 8.
7 would be better.
I don't do any trading but I haven't had any problems with JAVA scripting yet.
I do like the 30 second boot time though.

Our Company orders all our computers from Dell requesting all come with WIN 7 on them.
You might have to call Dell to get W7 on it.

ooooo. Vista sucks.... If you can find something with Win 7. Win 8 sucks even more the Vista. I'm in th middle of testing Win 8 for work. The good thing is we test for a long time. We just implimented Win 7 Sept 2102.

As for Java, I will ask some of my application developers if they have seen anything with Java. We have many application that use Java.

Shawn,

The easiest and most logical solution, by far, is to buy a Mac.

Windows 8.1 comes out next month, they are basically removing all the touchscreen crap and turning it into windows 7 with some of the upgrades.
When I get home I will do some looking on my system I have been running windows 8 for a couple months and once I had it configured correctly its pretty much the same program as windows 7.(I even have a start button)

And sad to say you think windows 8 has problem with Java please buy a Mac that wont even support some versions of Java.

Prior to OS 10.7, Macs came supplied with Apple's own version of Java, which didn't play nicely with some PC versions.

However, Mac OS 10.7 comes with full support for Java 7.

I've had to run both platforms on a regular basis. IMO, the Mac is a much more functional OS.

Your mileage may vary.

I appreciate everyone's input and do apologize for it not being Jeep related.

This is W8 64 bit and the Java is version 7 update 29, 32 bit. Hopefully the v8.1 is a free upgrade I'm sure glad it's Friday. I just spent a couple of hours dickin' around with a router that apparently gave up the ghost and buying another one with money that was most-definitely not in reserve for such issues. This has not been my week.

Phil, it actually died in the middle of my reply to you.
