Wierd VIN number on a CJ5?

Hi Jeepers

My friend and I, is in the process of buying a CJ5 Jeep..
But the VIN number is very odd its:

MWCJ0M83AC5****

The last 4 numbers is known to me, but is this a valid CJ5 number, if I look at all the VIN identifyers is says that it needs to be 17 chars long, and I only have 15..

Its a 1976 CJ5 with a V8 in it..

Can one of you shine some light over this?

Kind regards
Morten

I don't know if this will help, but I think your CJ was built overseas so any US-based VIN decoder you find won't help.

See if this gets you anywhere, und welkom op het forum! http://www.offroaders.com/tech/jeep/vin_72-80.htm

Hmm ok..

Thanks for your replys

Its the "MWC" or "MW" part that confuses me..

I have seen some Jeep VIN's that starts with CJ and J but not MWCJ..

We are just trying to figure out, what we are buying

And walkerhoundvm: Tak for det

I think the M or MW indicate the country of origin based on that webpage. W is Germany, Not sure about MW, but I think it's still Germany?

First before 1981 the vin was way different and not really a VIN but a Tag. In 76 the first letter of the Tag was make. Origin was not added until 81.

This being a jeep, then the first letter would be J on all CJ.

That being said a military jeep or a jeep for something else is a possibility. I would look for a Vin that starts with j on your jeep.

Next is it on a stock VIN plate or are you looking at a strip or a title.

So that breaks:
J = Jeep
0 = 1980
M = 4 speed
83 = CJ5
A = 3750 GVW
C = 258, 2 bbl

Only the serial number and not the whole VIN. My 1977 had a "J" (for Jeep) and a "7" (for 1977) and then the sequence number. All the "qualifiers" are missing.

I'd rather be lost on the trails than found at home!

Yes the stamp in some cases in before 81 have abbreviated Vins. Prob cause they stamped before they knew what was going to be on the build sheet.

Sometimes you get lucky and find a build sheet For the vech tucked away i a seat cushion. I had one that came with a back seat and the build sheet was in that one.
