Why doesn't this accelerator cable fit? (pics)

I am trying to replace my accelerator cable because it is looking a little worn. Went to Napa and bought one that is 21 7/8 inches long, compared it to mine and it was to short, tried it and it was to short. Returned it and NAPA they said the only other available is 36.5 inches long (to long).

I bought another at Advance and it was to short. My old one is 23 3/4 - 24 inches long. The only thing I can think is that the PO switched it when he installed the fiberglass body, but I have installed other fiberglass bodies and was able to use the old accel cable. Has anybody else had this problem? Does anybody have the correct part#?

I got mine from Lokar, stainless steel, good quality. While I was at it, I tore out all the mecanical linkages and ran the cable straight to the carb. Works ALOT better!

I bought one from these guys. They have one towards the bottom of the page that says it is 24 1/4", maybe that will work.

Man I'm realy confused, You bought an accelerator cable that was shorter than the one you have and it doesn't fit because it's to short?

Is NAPA's 21-7/8" cable what's listed for the jeep or just a generic length?

If 21-7/8" the origina length then yes it should fit but if the OEM length is 24" then your going to have to find one longer. I don't have my jeep with me today but i could measure mine later.

OK I guess I could have worded it a bit better. What I meant to say is that the parts book for the 84 CJ7 says it should be 21 7/8 or 36 1/2, not 24 inches. The one I am replacing is 24", the NAPA and Advance parts are 21 7/8. Sorry, Rob

Let me have those part numbers..

On this same subject, do you guys know what cable would work correctly in my 80 CJ5 with a 258 and a 4 barrel?

Check the link I posted. They have all kinds grouped by year/engine.

edit: Didn't read the 4 barrel part. That website I linked has all of the stock cables, you might have to rig it to fit an aftermarket carb.

I just learned that you can't always trust the auto parts stores, neither NAPA or Advance listed or offered a 24 inch cable. I now know that my Jeep came with and others offer this cable. Your best bet is to take it off, measure it and take it with you to the store.

Here are my pics. Don't know how much good they will do you. It's hard to get a good shot with that MC in the way. My setup has two cables on it because of the transmission (automatic) kickdown!
