what year did they start putting rollbars in cj5?

hi i was wondering what year they started putting rollbars in the cj5? or did it depend on what the buyer wanted as a factory option? i'm seeing some 1980 cj5s with rollbars and some without.

thanks

The very first CJ5 sold to the public had a rollbar in it. If you see someone riding around without one, then they foolishly removed it themselves.

You would think that would be true, But it's not.
You could order a CJ without a roll bar.
I own 2 CJ5's that were never optioned with a roll bar.
One was just restored, and the other is 100% original with 68K miles.

thank you for the posts. i know the cj5's stretched a long span and that the early willys ones didn't come with rollbars.

LT1CJ7, what years were your cj5's? in your knowledge was the model 1980 cj5 available with or without rollbar?

i'm trying to figure out if it was user removed or came that way. it has a half cab, would that effect rollbar or no rollbar?

thank you

I have a 1969 & a 1973, And neither body has been drilled for a roll bar.
I'm not too sure of 1980.

I had a '64 CJ-5A ("Tuxedo Park") - bought it in '84 with 35K original miles from the original owner (He kept it in the barn). it had an OEM Roll Bar in it.

I don't think roll bars were offered as optional equipment until the late 60s or early 70s. I have a sales brochure from 1971 and it shows CJ-5s with and without rollbars. I had a 69 CJ-5 that did not come with a roll bar, and a friend of mine had a 68 that did not have one. I know this because we both installed aftermarket roll bars and there were no holes drilled for a roll bar. That is not to say you could not get a factory roll bar back then, ours just did not have them.

80's all had factory roll bars, safety requirements.
I think that every one had a roll bar from the factory since about 71 or 72

My 63 and 70 CJ's didn't have a roll bar either.

Not only are you wrong, the Jeep you posted is not the very first CJ5 either. It's a 69 or 70 model, and the first CJ5 came out in 1955.

Rollbars were optional equipment as late as 1974 or 75.

Yes roll bars were mandatory until 1976 when the CJ7 was introduced

Mandatory means optional, you had to pay extra if you wanted them. In the early years before the CJ5 the roll bar was mainly old welded up exhaust pipes.
