A lot of it you just glean from being around the stuff. I have an inherent distrust for folks who try to make something look like something it isn't (make a LeMans look like a GTO, etc) particularly when they put it up for sale. The guy was clearly trying to make this rig look more like a YJ. The door handle style is correct for '82 and up, the drivetrain is wrong for the year as the 304/T-150 combo wasn't used after 1979...the Dana 300 t-case was introduced in 1980 and the transmission choices changed and the 304 finally bowed out in 1981. Check the axle width...56" WMS would be correct for a wide-track (1982-1986). Look at the front upper shock mounts...wide tracks used bolt on shock towers, narrow tracks used short stud brackets welded to the frame. Earlier model would also have an extra rear crossmember near the rear shock mounts on the frame. Look this puppy over very closely.
