what year could this jeep be

I am going to look at my 4th jeep tomorrow (i have a 57 cj5 99 tj and a 98 xj) So I know a lot about jeeps now I am going to look at an 84 cj7. http://worcester.craigslist.org/cto/821872711.html

He told me it is an 84 with the 304 and a 3 speed manual and 98000 miles. I thought that they stopped putting the 304 in the cj's in 81. any idea if they even made a 3 speed manual for the v8? and what years they where available.

the jeep probably is an 84

the motor may have been swapped...

jot down the VIN and run it through one of the myriad of "jeep vin decoder" s on google...

then you will at least know where the VIN plate and title have been.

2 grand isnt bad.

buy it then sell me the hard top.

Ya I will get the vin tomorrow. The guy had a heavy accent so I just decided to get it tomorrow. The way I see it is if it has no rust then it is worth it. but they did make a 3 speed manual for the 304?

It's a hodge-podge from what I can see...I'd venture that the VIN isn't legit/doesn't match. Looks like it's a narrow track ('84 would be wide track) which would be in line with a 304/T-150 combo and I'll bet it's backed with a Dana 20 ('84 would have a Dana 300 which doesn't bolt up to the T-150). YJ rear flares and side steps are an obvious retro-fit (no biggie, just something to point out).

I noticed the yj flares, but lots of people put tj flares on yj's so i disregarded that. So Jeepskate you know more about this style than me what should I look for to get a pin point on this thing? As you could probably tell I know plenty about early cj 5's 97+ xj's and tj's I also have done lots of research on yj's and just recently some on jk's (looking for a friend) but never really read up on the cj7's.

so basically how to i pick out differences between everything?

A lot of it you just glean from being around the stuff. I have an inherent distrust for folks who try to make something look like something it isn't (make a LeMans look like a GTO, etc) particularly when they put it up for sale. The guy was clearly trying to make this rig look more like a YJ. The door handle style is correct for '82 and up, the drivetrain is wrong for the year as the 304/T-150 combo wasn't used after 1979...the Dana 300 t-case was introduced in 1980 and the transmission choices changed and the 304 finally bowed out in 1981. Check the axle width...56" WMS would be correct for a wide-track (1982-1986). Look at the front upper shock mounts...wide tracks used bolt on shock towers, narrow tracks used short stud brackets welded to the frame. Earlier model would also have an extra rear crossmember near the rear shock mounts on the frame. Look this puppy over very closely.

Ya I am here from time to time. Me and my dad are restoring a 57.

I looked at it and it was not in bad condition. was lifted on 33's with along with a suspension lift there was a 3 in body had a swapped in 304 with headers and true dual exhaust no cats Vin showed it is an 84 with the 4.2.
