what year is it?

ok, the jeep was deliverd today. it was spose to be a 75, well its not that for sure. the frame is boxed, it has an AMC20, dana30 w/discs, i believe a T-150 and a dana20?

cause of the 2 bolt disc brakes and T150 i am going to guess its a 79. got a dif guess let me know. there is no vin or title so guessing is all i can really do.

Does it have a windshield? All '76 and up windshields have the wiper motor outside the w/s frame.

How about the front of the rollbar? Mid-79 and newer have the forward two legs of the roll bar attached to the floor just forward of the rear wheelhouses. Early '79 and older have them mounted on top of the wheelhouses.

Not too many other differences to separate a '79 from the other years that you haven't already mentioned (the T150/Dana 20 says '79 or older).

yeah, the roll bar goes to the floor. i have a 79 so knew bout the roll bar thing. after doing a lil more research i am convinced its a 79. only one thing is still stumping me, granted i dont know crap bout cj5s but, i thought all jeeps came from the factory with a tailgate. this jeep doesnt have one and i cant find anything that would make me think it ever had one. its just flast across the back like a fiber tub(well cept for all the rust)

Cool

My '79 CJ-5 doesn't have a tailgate either. Does you motor still have an ID tag? That might gve you a clue, unless it was a swap.

Lots of '76-83 CJ5s don't have tailgates. Prior to that they all had tailgates and all of the CJ7's had tailgates.

From shopping around for my Jeep, I'm pretty sure that the CJ5's didn't have tailgates. The spare tire carriers that I've seen for CJ5's attach strait to the rear (which would prevent a tail gate from flipping down). So don't fear, I'm pretty sure the 5's didn't have them.

CJ5's came both with and without tailgates, depending on model and year. Look on the VIN plate. The first letter should be a J. The next number will denote the year(this is for CJ's from 76 to 80).

My CJ-6 doesn't have one and I wish it did! It would be nice to have easy access to all that room!

I know what your saying. My 71 Renagade II didn't have one either. Had to put a 65 body on to get one.

Since I will have to do some floor/side body work on it someday soon, I have toyed with the idea of taking off the one piece rear section (at the seams) and welding in a tailgate rear section from a donor CJ-5. Sure, it would be a royal pain, but it would look stock. I would really like to use a post 75 tailgate area, but the body top rail and seam locations are different. Rats!

I don't know if it is a 79 because of the axles. The AMC 20 was only used after 80. If it is the original axle. If it were a 79 it would have a Dana 44 rear I believe.

73 CJ-6 in the works
