What trans would this CJ-7 have?
I was looking at a house for sale yesterday and I noticed the owner had a beat up CJ-7 sitting in the woods.

It was raining so I didn't walk over to it. Its a 1980 CJ-7. I asked the owner what trans it had, he said 4 speed, and that the first gear was not a creeper gear, and he didn't know what model trans it was.

He said if I buy the place the Jeep is mine! I plan to go back and crawl under the Jeep to see what trans it is, or to get the numbers off the casing.

Anyone have any knowledge or guesses what 4 speed trans came in a 1980 CJ-7???

T-176, T-177 1980-86. SR-4 1980-81.
T-4 1982-86
I just looked this up in my 4wd hardware catalog, they have exploded view pictures you can compare to the one in the jeep.
hope this helps!

probably a T4 or a T150...
T-176 and T-18's have pretty low first gears...

My guess was T4 or T150.

Are either one of those trans any good for highway and trail riding use? Will either one hold up behind a 360?

I still think I would rather have a T18 over the T4. Seems as if many folks have the T150s.

If it happens to be the T-176 it will probably hold up to a 360 because it was available behind the 304. :)

hey "mud 4 me",
Heres a simple way to check......sit in the Jeep and try to shift into reverse. If you'r able to push down and the shifter will then go towards the upper left, you have an SR-4. If it has a "normal" shift pattern, with a straight shifter, it's a T176, with a curved shifter, a T-4.......Good luck on the house hunting.

It's not a T-150, that is a 3 speed. It is either a T-176 or SR-4 if it is stock. Otherwise, it is a T-4. It is definitely not the T-18 of your first gear isn't low. Is the jeep a 4-banger? If so, it is the SR-4 tranny, although the SR-4 was also used behind some 258's.

SR-4 barely will hold up to a 6, so don't even bother trying to use that. T-176 will hold up to a 360 as long as you don't go nuts, I personally wouldn't use a T-4 behind a 360, but it won't be that tranny unless it was swapped in at some point (wrong year).

T-18A or T-18 is the best choice behind the 360, but they are costly (although I did see a T-18/Dana 20 go on Ebay for only $355 last week, the guy stole it).

The time now is 02:02 AM.
