What is the tallest tire I can use?

I have a 79 CJ7 now with shackles with 35 SuperSwampers and MT 15x10in rims. I want to remove the shackles and was wanting to know what is the tallest tire I could run? She has Wagoner axles so she has a wide stance already and I want a tire that is ?? x 12.5 . she is more of a street jeep not a mudder those days are long passed. So I was thinking of a tire I new back in the old days was the Goodyear Wrangler radial.

So guys what is ?

How long are the shackles bolt hole to bolt hole and what other lift do you have? Doesn't look like you have enough clearance there for anything more than a small speed bump as it is. Off-hand, I'd probably drop to a 33".

Sorry, 4 inch shackles on the front 6 inch shackles on the rear and no other lift.

Also would it help with the steering issue if the jeep was lowered back to original?

Are you absitively, posolutely certain of that? Highly doubtful that a true 35" tire like a Swamper would fit on your Jeep like that with only 1" of shackle lift in the front & 2" of shackle lift in the rear. This is mine briefly with 3" of lift and 35" BFG AT's (measure closer to 33") while I was waiting for my 32's to come in:



Looks like it was sitting about the same as yours is.

Back to stock, 31's fit reasonably well and 32's work OK on the street. Removing the front lift shackles would help put your caster back to spec and help steering issues...obviously you need to check alignment and check for worn/loose parts too.

I measured like you said and also she has wagoneer axles and leaf springs and there is no body lift at all, the tires are Super Swamper radials 35x14.50x15
All fittings on the front end seem fine but I also know that CJ's have a steering issue mine is not that bad.

yes that is correct wagoneer axles and springs , so what would be the tallest tire if a lose the shackles

A stock Wagoneer front spring (rears are too long to use on a CJ without major modifications) is about equal to a 2.5" CJ lift spring, so you do have some lift other than the shackles.

A 33" tire should work well with this setup if you lose the lift shackles.

On the other end of the tallness spectrum, the waggy dana 44 axles are limited to 35" tires unless you upgrade to chromoly shafts.

Ah, see, you left out the part about the Waggy springs. CSP is correct, that's about a 2.5" lift. Your front springs would be outboarded to run the front axle full-width and the mounts/hangers would've been located to accomodate the additional spring length. I'm going to guess that another set of front springs was used on the rear.
