On my 81 CJ7 with a 258 engine, there is a module with nine wires coming out. It is located directly opposite the alternator on the passenger side wheel well. The wiring diagram I have does not indicate this part. Can someone tell me what is is and its purpose? Thanks.
No, it's not the starter relay but it is to the right of the relay in your picture. I believe it is the MCU as stated in another reply. Thanks for the reply.
That would be the first generation MCU used in the 49 state '81 & '82 build years.
It is or was used to control the fuel feed back system by taking readings from the O2 sensor and controlling the BBD stepper pins and the sol-vac actuator.

Thank you. Since I have a Motorcraft 2100 carb, I assume that this module isn't doing anything and could be removed along with its associated wiring. Is this correct?
Yes sir, you can unplug it or follow the wires to snip and remove them from the harness.
