What goes here?

On my rear axle (dana 44) there is a piece missing on the hub, but I don't know if its important or difficult to replace, or ok to drive like this. It was missing when I got the Jeep.

The blank space at 12:00

Isn't that the hole in the axle flange so you can tighten the 4 nuts that hold the backing plate on?

Not the little hole, theres a bigger hole behind it and more towards the center. If you follow the curve it just makes that hole look open. Unless I'm just being dumb which is very possible.

Two things come to mind right away...

Dana 44s have SIX bolts holding the axle retainer/brake backing plate in.

There is supposed to be a 'Freeze Plug' looking thing driven into that hole.
If you don't, your brakes get packed with mud, water, dust, gravel, ect.

It's ALWAYS good to plug that hole.
I use a 'Core Plug' or 'Freeze Plug' in there, but I usually use an over sized socket and expand it a little big for a REALLY tight fit before I drive it in.

I just put a set-10 bearing into a D44 on a 74 IH WagonMaster. It had 4 bolts holding the backing plate/retainer on. So I assumed all D44's were the same. Jeeps may have 6 bolts, but the IH I worked on had 4.

Say it ain't so! The almighty all-knowing Jackhammer made a mistake?

Every Dana 44 I've ever seen only has 4 bolts holding on the backing plate. A simple search even found pics to verify, just looking at the retainer plate makes it obvious that there are only 4 bolts: http://scoutparts.com/products/photo...le_flanges.jpg

Six studs/nuts for a front spindle, but only four on a rear axle retaining plate.

My rear 44 has 6 studs but they are holding on a spindle since it has been converted to a full floater. I just looked at the stock axle retainer plates and they also have 6 holes so I would have to agree with JH. My axle is from a 72-75 CJ5 with 11" drums. Mine looks exactly like part #29 with 6 holes. Picture from Morris4x4.
