You have the Iron Duke, so a small upgrade may be in order. This bolt pattern is the same as any GM 90 degree smallblock iirc. The 4.3, 305, 350 etc. I think some 3.8's may work as well.

Newer CJ's (after 83?) have the amc 2.5, which is the same as the GM 90 degree blocks, 2.8, 3.1, 3.4

Please note that your transmission isn't designed for the power that the larger V8 engines will produce. A 4.3 might be a good option for you as they are a dime a dozen.

the factory transmission behind the iron duke will not even hold up to a 4.3 very long unless you've got one of the few with a t176. I would plan to replace the tranmission as well if you plan to go to a larger engine.

I would go to a salvage yard for the engine. I priced a 4.3L vortec v6 a few weeks ago. For the Engine, all accessories, bell housing, computer, and wiring harness, they only wanted $750. Also would gurantee all parts for 3 months. For a CJ5, I'd stay w/ a standard tranny. Something like one of those granny 4speeds from the 80s. If you go with an auto tranny, w/ the adapters and everything required, the rear drive shaft gets pretty short and could cause you problems...especially if your rig is lifted.

Craigslist is a great place to find parts. For ease of the swap, i'd stay carb instead of going FI with the 4.3 This would also prevent your tranny from exploding if you take it easy as the carb will have a bit less hp/torque. You could then take your time upgrading the rest.

Off your profile you list a 5sp trans, which would be the T5. If you wish to retain the T5, I would simply look for a 4.2l or 4.0L I6 with the associated SR4/T4/T5 bellhousing, if you want more oomph. Or rebuild/replace the existing 2.5L engine with some mild upgrades. You will get a variety of opinions concerning the durability of the T5.

One of the things that kill the performance of the I4 (and kills the T5) is large diameter tires without proper axle gearing, don't slap a set of huge rubber onto axles with 2.73 gears.
