What engine is this? ('79?)

Hi all, my girlfriend is buying her first Jeep today and I was wondering what engine it's hauling? I'm trying to figure out if it's a 3.8L or 4.2L. Also, what is that silver thing at the top? Sorry I do not know much about engines yet and I'm also a YJ guy. If I recall correctly, it's a '78 CJ.

Thanks,
YJ owner

silver thing should be the PCV/crankcase breather and that looks to be the good ol 4.2L 258

1985 CJ7 Project

Phase Two: Bedliner, Rollcage, Seats, BESRK Rear Bumper w/ tire swing, Soft Top, and a few other goodies - Mostly Complete
Phase Three: Waggy 44 front, Scout D44 Rear, 4.56's, ARB's (F/R) SOA with YJ Springs, 35x12.50x15 BFG MT - Not Even Close to beginning

Also a mostly rust-free 1970 Scout 800A That I'll get to start working on someday...

If it is the original engine it should be the 4.2, that being said if it has been swapped the only way to tell is by the casting numbers or the engine id tag. The 232(3.8) and the 258(4.2) have identical bore but a different stroke so they look the same from the outside.

The 232 (3.8) was available in '78, so don't assume it's a 258 (4.2).

It's a series of letters stamped into a machined surface near the distributor that determines externally what the engine is, not casting numbers or an ID tag.

See and I thought it was in 77 since I was told it was even rare for mine to have come with a 232. And the stamped numbers and letters is what I meant for is tag, but I do believe you can also identify the difference by the casting numbers on the drivers side, that's how I originally identified mine as a 232.

Mystery solved: It's actually a '77 with a 4.2L!

Thanks for the replies, guys!
