What did i break?

I was backing out of the driveway to go to class and as i turned while backing into the road i heard a small pop nothing major, so i take it out of reverse jump out and give it a quick look and saw nothing. Get back in and i won't go anythere i try shifting thru the transfer case and nothing happens do the same with all gears in the trans and still nothing. SO i get out lock the hubs put it in 4 hi and off we go pull back in the driveway get in my car and go to school. The question is what did i break i haven't had time to look good but nothing seemed out of the ordinary when i looked at the drivetrain. ITs been running fine no poping grinding nothing at all. I'm gonna give it a good look after class any help would be great, maybe what to check first or what you think it might be.

I assume you looked at the u-joints on the rear driveshaft. Same thing happened to me one time while I was on the road. I put it in '4wd' and turned it into a front wheel drive to get home. ....yep... u joint.

I disagree....if it were a u-joint, his drive shaft would have been hanging loose at one end for to not move at all.

Chances are you still have the stock 2 piece axles in a model 20 rear and you have spun a hub. The best fix is to put in a quality set of one piece axles.

I looked at the u joints and the drive shaft and even twisted and pulled on it in the second i had and everything seemed good. I do i check to see if i spun a hub? I"m new to this jeep thing.

when i stripped my shaft, i had it in 2wd with the trans in gear and got out to see what was up. my driveshaft was spinning but the wheels werent turning. i then noticed the nut in the middle of one of my rear wheels spinning. game over at that point.
i put in moser 1 piece axles and moved on. if your interested search for one piece axles and you'll find a ton of stuff. i think theres a new post on this topic every week. good luck

There are a bunch of good brands out there for 1 piece kits. If you're on a budget, do an eBay search for "crown" axles. theyre good and cheap.

Got home checked the driveshaft and u joints, both are good. Put it in gear got out and the shaft was spinning fine but it wasn't moving. Where do i go from here i don't wanna fix it too cheap but i dont want to go overboard and get way more than i need. It is the amc 20 rear. I have a running v6 70 cj-5 that i just bought that is in farily rough shape, it has the dana 44 in the rear should i just swap the entire thing or put the one piece and a locker in the 20

If you plan on swapping the 44 in fairly soon, I would just replace the broken shaft with another two piece. No need to spend money for nothing. If you plan on keeping the 20, then you need to go with a good quality axle, superior etc. Some guys on here say that an AMC 20 with quality one piece axles, truss, etc are as good as a 44.

So the axle pretty much is the problem? if i'm gonna replace it anyway i might as well go one piece and just leave the 44 in the other jeep and save some trouble. I've never done this swap how long should it take or should i take it somewhere?

I was in simular situation as you when my shafts went. i had spent years imporving my jeep and looked at all the 1 piece kits out there and tried to compare the difference b/w rolled and forged shafts and how about $100 more meant another 10years on warranty. i think my mosers were about 300 or so and i went with those because they were reputable, seemed to stand behind what they made, and were made very well from what i saw. i wasnt really interested in beating the hell out of my rig on the trail so i didnt think i needed the best and toughest, but sure as hell didnt want to regret later that i got the cheapest.
if you were on a squeaky tight budget i guess you could go w/ replacement 2 piece shafts but if i remember right they were not much cheaper in the long run than a cheaper set of 1 piece.
to wrap it up. if you want to keep this jeep for a while and than get a good 1 piece kit. jeeps are money and you'll have to get used to investing in these mods.
sucks but it really sucks going threw jeep withdrawl on nice days

You're looking at about $50 each for the two piece rear axles.
