That could be because of a certain batch/lot. Light also affects the color of a vehicle, sun, florescent and incandescent all show different aspects of the pigment.
Later, T.J.

I don't have the chip set for 1978 but looking at the 1979 paint chip set I'd say it's Russett Metallic.

I have a 78 with the original Autumn Red Metallic paint. The paint color is closer to a brown or maroon than red. The picture in question is closer to a bright red than Autumn Red Metallic. In fact when I have painted a couple of parts with a Duplicolor red primer, it is very close to the original paint color. I do not believe the color of Jeep in the picture is Autumn Red Metallic. There is a picture of my 78 CJ7 in my profile. I do not have enough post to include a picture.

Was a Red an original color for a Golden Eagle? Would decoding the VIN number help determine the color, if it is the original color that is?

I think that's "Firecracker Red" but computers don't always display colors as they really are.

Changed my mind and agree with sgtbookie - looks like Autumn Red Metallic.
