What is this?

I know this has been asked before....but kinda hard to search for this......

What is the purpose of this?

Originally, they were indents for folding down the soft top bows on the old CJs.

[At least, that's what I recall]

They started putting that indent on with the introduction of the new CJ-5 model in 1955 and was used mainy for the military version for exterior accessories. Most times it just had a footman loop screwed into that area for holding things even if the top was up.
