weber 38 manifold stud issue

I am mounting my 38 to a stock manifold. It's call for removal of the old studs and install the new. The problem is they don't wanna go in very well. The old ones appear as if the threads were rounded a bit. Anyone have this problem.

What am I missing. I just bolted my adapter on today. Old studs had to be removed to put the first plate on, and then a second plate is bolted onto the first plate.?
