Ok, I have been running with the vacuum advance running off the manifold and these are my feelings.
Off the manifold; once running it seems like there is more power from an idle, but not as much torque (not the same thing). When hot it seems to start harder.
I have gone back to the "S" port. It starts better when hot. Seem to much have more torque off idle, but does not seem to have as much HP. It has better road ability "manners" (smoother pickup from a stop on the clutch, smoother shifts).
