My Jeep buddy recomended a swap for the stock carb to a Webber carb. I am familiar with the popular swap but what are the small things and large things I am missing. Perhalps you can enlighten me. I have a 79 CJ5 3spd tranny, stock 258 I6 with stock intake and exhaust manafold and pipe. Thank you in advance
The 34/34 is probably the best Weber suited for the 258. The 38 is more than you'll need without engine/cam mods, while the 32/36 is ok. All need the FPR.
Also, you will need to make sure you continue using the return fuel line (from the 1 in 2 out fuel filter). Check it to make sure it is not clogged (use a vacuum pump to pump air through it), and make sure you replace the rubber fuel lines. Make sure your vent lines from the tank to the charcoal cannister are not clogged and replace those rubber lines too. Finally, take your time and reconnect all the emissions stuff you will need (being a '79, there isn't much).
Most important is the charcoal cannister...failure to use this can cause wierd pressure issues with the tank (unless an older vented gas cap is used). Basically, on most of our rigs, the gas cap is sealed and as fuel is used creates a vacuum in the tank (or can pressurize because of the heated unused fuel that is being returned to the tank). Long story short, $5 in rubber hoses and 1/2 hour work will save a few headaches...
Unless you are absolutely sold on the idea of a Weber, you may want to consider a Motorcraft 2100 carb. I was ready to buy a Weber and solicited input from this website, and many of the responses I received was to go with the MC2100. That's what I decided on, and I did the install a couple of days ago. I had no prior carburetor experience, yet I had it installed and running great by the end of the day. I bought one that was already rebuilt and came with the gaskets and adpator that I needed and saved $$ over buying a Weber...:2thumbsup:
Thanks all! I have had the carb for 8 plus years. I got it for a VW build so its time for the upgrade on the jeep. Thanks for the input I love it when you guys chime in Thanks. D
