Want to get 82 CJ7 inspected but blinkers won't work!!!
I just purchased my first CJ7, it is an 82. The brake lights and reverse lights work fine however when I pull up/down on blinker knob the blinkers do not come on (neither on the dash or the actual tail lights). I wasn't sure if the fuse needed replacing or if a ground was messed up. Any ideas?

Do the lights come on but don't flash? If so, replace the turn signal flasher.
AutoZone.com | | Turn Signal Flasher | ELECTRONIC FLASHER 2 PIN There are two of these... one for hazard and one for turn signals.

Ugh, I hate the thought of digging behind the dash to the speedo cluster...but you're gonna have to troubleshoot this. Start with the fuse and bulbs. Keep in mind you've got several bulbs that should be blinking depending on your light set up. And be careful when you mess with the cluster. With an 82 things can deteriorate so gently check those little bulbs. The blinker switch itself (in the steering column)was a flimsy design from the factory and once it started cracking it's pretty worthless...and a pain to replace...hope you don't end up there (if you do, buy a quality replacement, not the cheapest). New bulbs, fuses, and a tube of dielectric grease can work wonders.

moe than likely the problem you will encounter is a bad conection at the blinker itself. the blinker is located at the top left of the fuse block just above the park brake. Use a test light to see if you have voltage at the terminals with the flasher removed and the key in the run position. If not, then check the fuse. As far as i'm concerned, the likelyhood of the t/s switch being the culprit is slim.. usually if t/s switch goes bad, you will only have brake lights on one side or the other or the switch will fail to detent(stay in the left or right turn position). When they do go bad, they are not that bad to change.. the steering wheel has to come off and the plug has to come up through the steering column.Last edited by chucksrustyjeep; 09-19-2009 at 10:59 AM.. You should check the fuse first.
Usually when the flasher goes bad, they still light up, but not always. The flasher is a round can maybe on the fuse panel if there are two round cans, otherwise it is hanging on a wire up by the emergency brake or steering column if there is only one round can on the fuse panel. Does it make a difference if the headlights are on?

Mike, I noticed that there ARE two round cans on the fuse panel, and I double checked and it doesn't matter if the lights are on or off, the blinkers dont work at all......

Ok, have you tried the emergency flashers? They are on a separate fuse and may still work or it may narrow it down some. Likely blown fuse though. If a new fuse blows right away, suspect a bad front bulb.

If someone bumped the Emergency light switch (about 1/2 way in) they go dead. Flick the 4 ways on (see if they work) and off (then see if the signals are working again)

What was I thinking

Quote:
If it's the second case, try this, Put your turn signal in either left or right and does one of the brake lights go out. If it does then you have either a blown fuse or bad flasher. OF course we should never forget to look for a corroded connection in the fuse box. |
